Ownership verified by DX not red, but amber
Posted by ponger on 9/10/2008
Involvement: General (knows how to use it) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: The polarity is correct and the quality seems decent. The emitter snaps right into the 1918 23mm optic's holder, though I suspect a lot of light will be wasted since the optic does not surround the dome on the LED.

Cons: The two emitters I got are NOT RED. They are Orange/Amber.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: The two LEDs I got draw about 280mA at 2.7v from two freshly charged NiMH AA cells according to my multimeter.
I haven't gotten an optic plus power on these yet so I don't know how the output compares to something like a Planet Bike SuperFlash with its 1/2 watt red LED.

Ownership verified by DX Luxeon/SSC-type Red LED.

Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Can replace Luxeon/SSC-type emitters.
Decent brightness.
Reasonable price.
Doesn't have a gummy dome.

Cons: Crees are probably brighter.
No coloured emitters mounted on anything smaller than a 21mm star.

Other Thoughts: It makes for an interesting outdoor experience. You can use the beam as per normal, but you can still see your surroundings as good as if you weren't using a (regular) torch.
Also the ambient light in the red wavelength is less visible, which makes it useful for stealth purposes.
Uses around 0.5Amps at around 2.4 Volts
My last review got screened because I padded it with dots to get to 500 characters. I'll also not mention it's performance in comparison to a third party add-on for a popular range of torches in case that was what they didn't like.

Bottomline: The only option for torches with Luxeon/SSC optics.

Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Incredibly bright for the money. I put this into a cheap flashlight I had laying around. This actually outshines my friend's $120 Surefire Flashlight. While I don't really know much about how to check for quality, it seems to be solidly constructed. I have no complaints what so ever. Its especially good at night or in dark areas because the red does not inhibit your nightvision at all.

Cons: None. If you want a good red emitter upgrade, buy this one.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: A great buy for the price, no question.
