When we first got our hands on this product, we didn't believe that someone would come up with an idea of powering lamps by phone line. Well, the fun is that you don't pay for the power (or batteries) used, and since usually when electricity is out phone lines still work, it will light the dark during those emergencies. In my opinion, since it costs nothing to power and its LED bulbs lasts forever, its a great night lamp for any room. Better yet, when your phone rings, the lamp flashs giving you some extra visual feedbacks. When the phone line is in use, however, the light automatically switches itself off, possibly to prevent affecting voice quality of the line.

One side note: in some occasions the lamp (switched on) seems to interfere with the caller ID feature. We are unsure of whether this applies to all phones or not.

Update: now includes an AAA battery bay (at the bottom of the unit) so you can use it either stand-alone or with a phone line.

Ownership verified by DX Good for phone-less line

Pros: - Works from the phone line
- Decently bright (brighter on phone line than with batteries)
- Build quality average. Doesn't feel like it'll break at any moment, but it still feels plasticky and the paint starts to flake off almost immediately

Cons: - The line is occupied whenever the light is on
- Does not use the newer 20.000 mcd white LEDs
- Too light if batteries not inserted: unstable even on its own, will be blown away by a gentle breeze
- Short cable, will probably require phone line extension
- Stock carbon-zinc cells are the cheapest, nastiest I've ever seen

Other Thoughts: Probably easy to mod with 20.000 mcd LEDs

Bottomline: An original idea.
Good if you have an internet-only line with no phones, or if you don't care that the phone will be unusable when the light is on. Bad otherwise, as the free-power potential is its main selling point. There are better lights to use with batteries.
Of note that even when there's no phone contract in effect most home phone lines are left powered anyway, and *should* be able to power the light fine.

Pros: Bright enough to shine on my book while not waking up my dorm mate. I had to use double sided tape to keep it from sliding around on my table but that is only because I like to bend it past its balance point

Cons: Mine does not always blink when i receive a call.

Other Thoughts: .

Bottomline: Could think of many uses, free power, low cost and fast shipping.

Pros: Works as advertised. Relatively bright when running on batteries (please keep in mind that it uses 8 5mm LEDS. Don't expect huge amounts of lighting)

Cons: Very weak output when running from phonelines (Almost not illumination.) I have trouble fully seating in batteries to the bottom. They make contact but cannot be correctly seated on mine.

Other Thoughts: The bulbs get quite hot after being run on batteries for awhile. I wonder if there's even a resistor in there? Could mean the LEDS are overdriven & may not last very long.

Bottomline: Nice novelty light but, still a little rough in construction. Still very usable as a reading light for illuminating an area the size of a paperback book.

Pros: I would give 3.5 stars if I could.
The light is bright enough to light my keyboard when I have the room lights off or low. I like the flexibility of the gooseneck - it's fun to play with. The base is reminiscent of a travel-size mouse, and the button presses easily to turn on and off. Light is bright enough to read by.

Cons: This lamp does not work at all when connected to my phone line. It's a good thing it takes AAA batteries. I tried it with the phone line with or without batteries installed, with the button pressed or not, but no joy. At one point I did manage to get a *teeny* flash without AAAs but that's not what was described. My corded phone (tried same jack) lights up just fine.

The batteries that are included are TERRIBLE. The "brand" is PenesamiG (looks like a Panasonic knockoff). I don't care about the name - lots of knockoff batteries out there. However, these are the first batteries that easily deform when pressed! This is dangerous. The batteries are slightly too long and I really had to press hard to get them into the base. I considered not using them, but I'm just hoping they don't leak or explode I guess! Please don't let kids handle them.

As far as the light itself, it's maybe a little dimmer than I expected, but that's probably because I was blown away by the light output from those little 22000mcd keychain lights!

Other Thoughts: One nice addition would have been to put little rubber feet on the bottom to make it non-skid as it tends to slide around on the table.

Bottomline: I was pretty disappointed to find out that the phone line power option didn't work for me, but I don't regret buying the light since I can still use it in another location, and it wasn't very expensive.
