Ownership verified by DX Can't go wrong

Involvement: General (knows how to use it) - Ownership: less than 1 day

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Three parts - two glued firmly together the strike has a ground edge to enable scraping along the flint-stone (paint soon scrapes off)
Sufficient sparks are made to ignite decent tinder.

Cons: Not really - hard to tell how long this would last - but if you are only likely to use it once or twice a year - then it would last years, if you are Ray Mears then you would probably want something more hardcore!

Other Thoughts: Undo the chord and tie a knot in each end so that there is sufficient length to use the strike on the stone.

Bottomline: Well - if the end of civilization was tomorrow - I would certainly want this item with me!! Then again - maybe ten!

Pros: The cheapest firesteel out there.
Much bigger and more hard wearing than I had thought.
Very hot, intense sparks - lights kindling first time.

Cons: Striker is OK (not brilliant) but the cord attaching it is too short. Throw it away or undo the loop and tie the striker and steel at either end.

Other Thoughts: Brilliant survival tool. I want my kids to be bit more "outdoor" and this is a great way to teach them simple firelighting techniques.

Bottomline: If you are into camping, bushcraft or even if (you think) you are going on a long, comfortable, trip - make one of these your keyring.

Pros: Easy to use.
Effective.
Good price.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Unlike other users I found the length of string quite sufficient to get a good strike, so long as your striking with the edge rather than the end of the striking tool.
The rubber grip offers a good hold whilst striking and dry tinder or material such as tissue ignites readily.
Seems to be quite solid and should last for a long time.

Bottomline: A cheap and fun tool to have around.
Be apocalypse ready, with Bush still in power we may all need one soon!

Pros: An excellent tool. Generously sized! Works very efficiently and rapidly lights things like tissues, dry grass, tinder etc. I often have to use this tool as there are never matches or lighters around. The price is amazing, I previously bought one a few years ago and I finished it.

Cons: The blade it comes with is rubbish. It promptly snapped on me the first time. Luckily I had the serrated steel blade from my previous one. Any standard knife blade can be used though.

Other Thoughts: Many people have trouble with this thing. Its nothing like matches. There is a correct technique you have to practice. I've been using these for ages, if you know how to do it correctly you'll have no problem.

Bottomline: For army, camping, emergencies this is wonderful!
(my mates think its very cool, but I wouldn't bother blabbing so much had it not been for the 500 character policy! :)
Cheers!
