The main difference between this unit and the DSD charger is that the UltraFire has two separate charging channels. This is a huge difference as you can now safely charge two batteries with different capacity or charge state.

On the downside, this UltraFire unit does require a spacer to charge CR123A and CR2 batteries. It is not available yet but it will be here soon. For now, a piece of a metal (such as paper clip) can be used as a spacer.

** Report on recessed contacts: Customer Ron reported that the positive nodes of the charger is overly recessed into the top of the unit causing problems charging some 18650 batteries and a workaround for this is to bend a paperclip and use it as a filler between the node and your battery. In the meantime, the Ultrafire 18650 batteries charge fine with this charger as is.

Pros: For the price you pay, its not a bad deal at all, decent quality and this performs as described. This is actually the 2nd one I purchased. The first one was for me, I liked it and this one is for a friend of mine. What I like most is the seperate LED lights for each bank, you'll know which one is finished charging

Cons: not much to dislike about this lithium battery charger

Other Thoughts: If you are in the market for a decent lithium battery charger, try this instead of the cheaper ones.

Bottomline: fair price
works great
led for each charging bank lets you know when its done charging

Pros: Charges my unprotected 18650 perfectly. While charging, every 1.4 seconds it stops the charge current to measure voltage. My charger charges a few millivolts past 4.2 then stops the charge. This might be a little close for some, but I believe it is within spec for the cells. Fairly gentle charge current, so it takes a while to charge an empty 18650, but the advantage is that it can charge smaller cells without damage. Easy mod to enable the side contacts. Took about 15 minutes to do. Now I can charge my rcr123 cells without spacers. No external power supply (ac plugs directly into the unit). Can also run on 12VDC, but you'll have to get your own cable. Very light weight.

Cons: Can't charge 3.0V LiFePO4 cells. Cutoff voltage is not adjustable. I haven't owned it long enough to speak of reliability. I wonder how the sliding negative contact will hold up. All the current runs through the spring (shouldn't be a problem, but I don't know for sure).

Bottomline: Seems like a great buy if you need to charge Lithium ion cells. I still won't charge them when I'm not home.

Pros: Works very well with all my 14500 and 18650 cells. Cut off voltage seems to work satisfactorily, but see "Other Thoughts" below. The build quality for under $15 is good. The spring-loaded negative contact seems a bit flimsy, but works fine so far. The independent charging circuits are, in my opinion, a MUST HAVE item when charging Li-ion batteries.

Cons: The unused (horizontal slots) are a bit confusing. So, for the average user, I'd say they are a "con". However, for those up to the soldering challenge, the horizontal slots may be very useful. (I haven't modded mine yet, but I'll probably get around to doing it this weekend.)

Other Thoughts: Users should be aware of the idiosyncracies of Li-ion technology. Personally, I never recharge my batteries unless someone is around to respond to an emergency. And I have my charger hooked up to a timer, just in case I happen to forget to turn off the charger.

Bottomline: Good quality, good product, and great price. Recommended, provided the user exercise due care when operating the unit.

Pros: Easy to use, quality China-made item.
Well noticeable indication; red - charge is in process, green - charge is finished. Movable and handy battery "minus" contact. Low heat. Solid design, thick metal details that are rare in modern gadgets.
Wide power supply voltage rande.

Cons: Non-standard input connector for power cable, which is hard to remove if necessary.
Gadget has USA-type mains plug that is unusable in Europe. The plug can be replaced easily but only by qualified specialist.
No manual, even short; that violates regulatory rules for network power-supplied devices in some countries.
No voltage on contacts for CR123.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: Well done charger that is best for price/quality ratio.

Usage Instructions Return to top
Insert one or two 3.7V batteries to charge. Since the device has two isolated channels, you can simultaneously charge two batteries with different capacities.

* Note: although CR123A/CR2 batteries can be charged by this unit, a spacer is required to insert CR123A/CR2 batteries into the slots and this spacer is not included in this package.

An official ultrafire spacer will become available soon as an add-on. In the meantime, you may bend a paper clip to charge CR123A/CR2 batteries.
