Ownership verified by DX VERY useful
Posted by DNKROZ on 4/13/2009
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: - Small (very)
- Light weight
- Universal plug (for the thing you plug in, not for the adapter itself)
- Wide range
- Easy programming
- Has also physical switch

Cons: - No instructions
- Quality seems a little low
- No EUR plug version
- It's mechanical (by relé) so you'll hear clicks when turning it on and off.
- Seems to work better with some signals, not everyone gives you the same results.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to order the correct version (220 V or 120V) and do not plug power hungry appliances, it states that supports 500W, but I won't bet on that.

Bottomline: - Very useful, I use it for a lamp and to turn on/off my self-powered subwoofer (without the need to reach the switch)

Ownership verified by DX Does exactly what it says

Pros: I've been looking for a device like this for a long time. It'll work with any infrared remote, unlike much more expensive solutions that come with their own remote. It's simple to program and the power can also be switched on/off with the small button. It's also quite sensitive, you really don't have to aim very precise at it. According to my measurements, it uses less than 1 watt, so it makes for an excellent standbykiller.

Cons: Why oh why is it not available with Schuko (common in continental Europe) connectors? If I had to I'd pay double for this thing if it had Schuko connectors! It does work with adapters, but I have only one word for Edison plugs: dodgy! (how can Edison plugs still be legal in the USA?) Also, ground is lacking. This is the only reason it gets 3 points for usefulness because it limits the places where it can be installed. With Schuko connectors, that would have been 5!
A minor con could be the button, if used often I'm afraid it might break. Under normal conditions you hardly ever need the button though, so usually this won't be a problem.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: There are no other products like this one. Any standbykiller stores try to sell you won't work as well as this one because they are "dumb". This device actually learns the IR-code from your remote, which is what you want.
This kind of device should be available on every corner of the streets (with Schuko plugs). Since it isn't (it's very hard to find), buy it from DX!

Ownership verified by DX Great set

Pros: Easy to use set. Just press the button on the unit, and press the preferred button on your remote control, and it just works.

Cons: When your need a simple set to reduce your electricitybill, just buy this unit. Keep in mind that a cablereciever has an average use of 25 watt in stand-by. And what about audioset, DVD-players etc. etc.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: The unit itself uses about 11 watt. Okay, there are sets which uses about 1 watt or less, but for those sets you will pay about 45 euro.
So this set has a reasonable price/quality. If you need it, buy it!

Ownership verified by DX Works OK in Australian power socket

Pros: The two parallel power prongs are in fact designed to be rotated 45 degrees if necessary, so they fit the 45 degree Australian power sockets. They can be rotated both ways, so the plug can point up from the socket or hang down.
The device can also turn things on or off without the remote control, just press the small black button once.
Quite small considering what it does.

Cons: The two side sockets are useless in Australia and many countries with wide plugs. No ground connector either, so won't work safely for all appliances.
The power socket on top is poorly weighted, so plugging something heavy into it makes the entire device fall out of the wall. It should only be used for light things (heavy power packs may not work)
The black button is extremely small, could be a bit bigger for easy use.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: Handy as both a travel adapter and IR remote control device.
