Ownership verified by DX Star mounted SSC P4 U-bin LED
Posted by Black_Rose on 2/28/2009
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: - very bright
- more than half the cost of other sellers
- almost a direct drop-in replacement for star mounted Luxeon I & III LEDs.

Cons: - Only an issue if you are swapping out Luxeon LEDs. The overall height of the LED + star is slightly smaller than an equivalent Luxeon LED + star. May result in slight beam issue
- When I ordered these they were listed as "In Stock: ships in 1 to 3 days". They went on back order twice before I actually received them.

Other Thoughts: - I bought 3 of these to replace the star mounted Luxeon I LEDs in my Dorcy Super 1 watt CR123A lights. Almost doubled the output of the light while maintaining the current draw of the original Luxeon

Bottomline: - excellent LED on it's own or as a replacement for Luxeon LEDs.

Ownership verified by DX Not a bad LED

Pros: Great price, Easy to install (same form factor and optical properties as comparable luxeon emitters so it's an easy upgrade), very bright, efficient (has run for hours on end in a 3AA direct drive headlamp with minimal dimming)

Cons: Gummy dome is kind of weird and collects dust just by looking at it, slight greenish and bluish tint

Other Thoughts: I bought it to upgrade the luxeon 1W emitter LXHL-MW1D in a headlamp. It is just about the same size (the star is identical), and increased the light input I would estimate about 20%, but I'm sure it has more potential (only driven at 330mA currently). The luxeon appeared to have a more natural and smoother light though.

Bottomline: Excellent LED for the price. I have yet to try cree emitters but this is a tough one to beat!

Ownership verified by DX Excellent not only for upgrading older lights

Pros: Bright and good color temperature. Bottom of star PCB is isolated from chip.
Excellent for upgrading older lights, because optically compatible with Luxeon III.
I have bought ten or more over the last months and was able to upgrade many of my own and my friends lights. I'm going to continue getting these as long as there are upgradeable lights around.

Cons: Received one of at least ten that I bought, where the bond wires didn't contact the die so the device was lost (obviously by the time I found this out, I had removed the dome).

Other Thoughts: The dome of this LED is soft silicone, not sure if this is pro or con, it works.
This product is great to protect the environment, because it saves so many old lights from being thrown away by giving them a second life.

Bottomline: While I personally buy these LEDs for upgrading older lights, they are generally good LEDs in respect of price, color tint and brightness. Can't go wrong with these.

Ownership verified by DX bright and 120 degree viewing angle

Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: great price, bright, appears good quality and works well with SKU 3256 driver. Bit of warm one lit up, woa, it's only 29 C though I am not sure what's current from the driver. I used 6 V 400 mA power supply as input to the driver circuit. So with 80% efficiency, roughly 2 W driving power. So the LED is under driven. But it's still bright enough as table light.

Cons: order take too long, more than two months. However if you can wait, it's worth it.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: This LED is 120 degree view angle one. So good for table light. If you want use it for flash, the lights is kind of flooded. My flash light doesn't have adjustable focus, so i don't whether those flash light with adjustable focus would help or not.
