Pros: Very cool!!!This DOES work with WinXP (at least it does work with my Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 laptop). Installation of the CoolWord program went without a hitch (and with no virus or malware/spyware that I could detect). Pretty simple matter to transfer the default contents into the program, delete them, then flash over new content. Had it working in a jiffy.
Cons: Had some problems crop up, and I'm not sure of the exact cause. Initially, I had loaded the text 'Happy Birthday' into it using the Coolword Easy32 program. At first, the text would word wrap onto two lines, and show up that way on the device. So far, so good. Then I tried some other similar text and it would NOT word wrap for some reason. Very odd. Then I noticed that the bottom of the text was not showing up on the device (such as the lower part of a lower case "p" was not displayed). In fact, the lower 8 led's would not light up. My initial reaction was dismay at having a defective item. As a work-around, I reduced the size of the text so it would not need the lower 8 led's. Later that night, I plugged it in and it would not get recognized by WinXP. I uninstalled the program and the USB driver but it still would not work. Then, I changed the batteries. Presto! Everything worked. All led's worked. All was well. As a test, I put the original batteries back in. Everything still worked. How odd. So it is possible that changing batteries did a sort of hard reset, or that the unit is sensitive to battery voltage, or who knows ???I would like to note that in several places in the .doc files, it suggests removing and replacing batteries if there is a problem with the unit or the usb connection. Good advice if I would have paid attention. At any rate, I have decided against trying to do an RMA back to DX. I'll keep it and keep on playing with it.
Other Thoughts: The install CD has two programs; CoolWord_Easy32 and CoolWord32. The 'Easy' version is a more basic, quick interface. The other one is much more rich app with lots of little features I have yet to try. There is also a ms word doc on the cd that has pretty good instructions for the 'Easy' version of the software. The other version doesn't have a .doc file, but it's similar enough that figuring out things isn't too hard. There are some .avi videos as well, but they all show the Chinese version of the software, so not much use.
Bottomline: I was worried that it would not work with XP. But it worked on my XP. So I can recommend it. It is really a cool little device. And the feel of the build quality is very good; I am actually impressed by the construction quality. And I'm hoping that if any problems crop up, a quick R n' R of the batteries will correct it.
