Ownership verified by DX CREE LED review
Posted by devil777 on 4/9/2009
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: It is cheap and seems to be quite efficient.
It is quite useful in a flashlight, although it should be advised not to use it at full power, it will screw up your night-vision.
You can use it as a taillight on a bicycle, or you can use 10 of them to make a very bright taillight.
You can also use them to grow plants indoors, since plants absorb mostly red light.

Cons: The protective dome is fastened really weakly, it will come of if you put a bit of force on it.

Other Thoughts: It should be made available as just an emitter as well. and with a 14mm star.

Bottomline: A very handy and cheap LED for numerous applications

Ownership verified by DX Nice emitter But Lens Comes Off Easily.

Involvement: General (knows how to use it) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstar
Ease of Use: starstar
Build Quality: star
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Bright, Blinding when you mount 4-5 together. Good red color.

Cons: After buying 20 for a project. I have found that the dome lens is only held on with clear silicone. It comes off the emitter very easily. You won't be able to mount into or thhrough any hole without the lens coming off.

Other Thoughts: Would buy more if the lens comming off issue was fixed. Tried gluing lens back on. Don't know the long the glue will hold.

Bottomline: Great emitter if you don't need to mount through a hole, or where the lens could get bumped.

Ownership verified by DX The very RED of the LED

Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: This is the original Cree red LED, it works fine with SKU 7612 in flashing modes.
I have pushed the led beyond the max. spec'd 700 mA and it is bright enough to lit a small room.
For my red taillight I used SKU 15687 and the led fit in the head of the flashlight without any cutting.

Cons: The exact bin is not specified.
Could be sold also on 14 mm stars.

Other Thoughts: A smooth reflector will give a dark cross artifact at ranges below 1m.

Bottomline: As I have stated in the Product request forum it would be great to have this led in a P60 drop-in with a driver similar to SKU 7612

Ownership verified by DX I used one to get a higher CRI

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: It's Cree, Good quality
Easy to solder and connect

Cons: I don't have any.
I wish it came on a smaller star

Other Thoughts: I used this with 6 Cree Q5's to get a higher CRI. It worked very well but the high color temperature of the Q5's I used did not help.
I used 4-40 screws and made plastic washers from a card to screw it onto a heat sink without shorting anything out.

Bottomline: I'm going to try experimenting with other brands to try to find a brighter red emitter. But I would definitely buy these again.
