Pros: It's reasonably cheap for what it does, and the build quality feels fairly sturdy.
Cons: Your camera will not communicate with your lens because the adapters comes inbetween the lens and camera. The lens's contacts are not passed through tot the camera. As a result, the camera won't meter (on the D40 it doesn't) or autofocus. Your aperture will not be controlled by the camera as well, so lenses without aperture ring are stuck with the smallest possible aperture.
Other Thoughts: Since you will most likely be shooting macro photo's. Manual focusing shouldn't be a problem usually, since you'll be taking your time preparing your shot anyway. On the D40, you won't get exposure metering either, so you'll need to do some test shot and use the histogram to determine correct exposure.
Bottomline: A reasonable item for a good price. You'll have to live with some work-arounds.
Pros: It basically does what it's supposed to do, and it's fairly cheap.
Cons: The electrical contacts on the lens are not passed through to the camera, and thus there's no communication between lens and camera. This has the following consequences:- autofocus will not work-the camera will not be able to read the aperture size; on the D40, the camera won't perform exposure metering; you'll have to do things manually- if your lens doesn't have an aperture ring at all (aperture is completely controlled by the camera), then you're stuck with the smallest aperture.
Other Thoughts: Since the camera won't meter with the extension ring inbetween the lens and camera (the D40 doesn't anyway), you'll be messing with your exposure a lot. On the other hand, since you'll most likely be doing macro photography, the need to take your time shouldn't be such a big deal mostly.
Bottomline: It's cheap, and it works mostly. You need to keep in mind the disadvantages though.
Pros: Works exactly as it should, and allows you to get very close to the subject.Fitted my Nikon D40 without having to get the grinder out!As there is no glass involved, then a cheap set of these isn't going to affect image quality too much.
Cons: The instruction sheet (on tissue paper!), is only in Chinese, but to be honest you don't really need them. The threads are also easy to cross thread, so care is needed changing the tubes.
Other Thoughts:
Bottomline: At this price, an absolute bargain, and well worth the money.
Pros: Finally! i can take macro pictures with my awesome camera/ lenses! Yippee!
Cons: This thing didn't even come with an English manual.I had to play with it for a full day to understand how to use it!...Initially it was EXTREMELY confusing since the stupid manual wasn't in a language I understand!
Other Thoughts: Functionally, the "adapter" leaks some light through the extension tubes which causes the image to lose its quality :(
Bottomline: For this price, I decided it was worth giving it a shot.In the long run...BUY IT!
