Ownership verified by DX bargain!
Posted by superpila on 7/29/2009
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Can tailstand
Nice build quality and finish
Slim and light.
An XPE emitter (can be a pro if you are a collector and you don’t have any XPE light yet :-) )
Very bright on 14500
Best beam pattern I've ever seen: Acceptable throw and no artifacts!

Cons: Although featuring an XPE emitter, this light uses an XRE reflector. it could probably throw further witha an XPE specific reflector, but this is not really a cons if, light me, you were looking for a generic light, just a fact worth mentioning.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: For this price, buying this flashlight is like stealing. I think that this is the best single-mode aa for the price. The only comparable bargain is the Ultrafire A10, which is also slightly brighter, but this one is lighter and even less expensive. Buy several. NOW!

Ownership verified by DX Good Light Even If Not What I Ordered

Pros: Appears to be very well-built.
Will tail stand. Hurray for that crowd!
Nice, consistent finish.
Threads are clean and tight.
OP reflector. Can't get to it to tell if it's aluminum or plastic.
Very clean beam with no artifacts. Perfectly round. LED is mounted cleanly. Faint transition from larger spot to spill. This is not a thrower if that's what you are looking for.

Cons: When mine they arrived, one of two would not work until I took it apart and cleaned everything...and cleaned everything again, paying special attention to the goo (grease?) on the pill. This is not uncommon but it should be.
Single mode. A con for me because I purchased multi-mode, but it might not be a con for you and usually isn't for more people.
"Glass" lens feels plastic, but it's hard to tell. Might be the coating.

Other Thoughts: I ordered mine when they were originally advertised as multi-mode and mine arrived single mode. (Everyone makes mistakes so there's no sense getting upset) Still, I wanted multi-mode. I'll have to go through the process...and wait...again.
These aren't much brighter than P2-driven sku.3607, just more spill and definitely not as bright as the Q5 in sku.13974. sku.13974 blows it away but this one is smaller, so take your pick.
I wonder what this would be like with a red LED for tactical work. Perhaps a red filter over the lens...

Bottomline: If you want a very well-built, single-AA pocket torch with a Cree Q5 that has a little more flood than throw because of the smaller reflector, this is a good choice. For close to the same money, with a P2 sku.3607 will give you better throw with less spill but sku.13974 will give you MUCH better throw and brighter spill but that one uses 3-AAA batteries, hence higher voltage. Of the three, this one fits easier in the pocket.
Maybe I'll keep them. I don't know.
Buy one if this is something you think you might want. I cannot fault the product at all. In fact, I can recommend this product. It's just not what I ordered this time.
