Ownership verified by DX Not Good!

Involvement: General (knows how to use it) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Before it stopped working, it was good and seemed to have fast transfer rates. Nice and compact with all slots easily accessible. The USB plug was long enough to plug into tight fitting USB ports on my laptop.

Cons: The USB plug is plastic so not sure how long it would last.
The unit got really hot after a few minutes (maybe because mine was faulty).
It worked for abut a few minutes before died and now no longer works (DX have happily replaced it)

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: Good if you get one that works.
We will see how it goes second time around.

Pros: This unit is really small, and it reads my CF cards, for that size (and price!), its just what I wanted to avoid many different cables.
It works on both Windows and Mac, without any drivers (I have not tested on older Ws systems or Mac Os prior to X).
Can be carried along w/my digital camera

Cons: Plastic a bit cheap, but as many other reviewers said, at this price who cares!
On Os X, only reads 1 card at a time. You have to eject device and replace card to read a different card.

Other Thoughts: Its very fast (USB 2.0) and reliable, it worked Ok on my MacBook (Os X)

Bottomline: Buy it, really CHEAP and it just work!

Pros: Card readers are card readers. No complicated technology involved. It just read/write to memory cards as described. Compact - fits in camera bag nicely, and don't have to deal with USB cables. Reads many different formats just in case.

Cons: VERY flimsy. Some parts were loose inside the reader as soon as I got it, and (no offense) it seems like the 'typical' cheap 'made in China' product.

Other Thoughts: Although it does its job, and it's dirt cheap, if you care for the build quality, you may need to think twice about this one.

Bottomline: It works, but very flimsy.

Ownership verified by DX Compact cableless card reader

Pros: Easy to disassemble and take the circuit board out. Just pop off the end with the pen clip and pull the board out. (Hopefully the reader doesn't pop apart on its own. It hasn't yet.) Plastic quality is solid enough. Design is nice. Everything lines up well. Speedy when reading/writing--I copied almost 500MB of data onto a SD card in something around 2-2.5 minutes. It can handle microSD and Sony Pro Duo without adapters. It reads CF cards! Not too many other readers on DX seem to have that capability.

Cons: CF slot pins were bent strangely when I got the item. It could have been American customs' fault because they had opened the package. I bent them straight and it worked fine. Card reader can handle multiple cards at once on WinXP but *not* Mac OS X, which only displays the last inserted card. I don't know how to get OS X to display all the cards if there is more than one card inserted. USB-side cap seems easy to lose. It doesn't matter to me, but the packaging said it contains a SIM card editor software CD and a strap. I only got the reader unless customs took the cd & strap...unlikely. It doesn't seem to be able to handle SIM cards, as someone else mentioned. The pen clip has a lanyard hole, but it wasn't cleanly molded so I drilled it out and put my own strap on. USB plug isn't metal, it's a tab of plastic and circuit board.

Both status LEDs are blue. I like the color, but it would be nice to have two different colors (blue and red, blue and green, whatever)

Other Thoughts: It reads the formats I really wanted and fast too! It's less than $6 with shipping and it's good-looking! People in my department office keep moving/hiding/taking the card reader at work because we only have one. Now I can throw this reader in my bag and not worry!

Bottomline: There are probably other good readers on DX, but I am satisfied with this one. Consider it if you use CF cards and you don't like carrying cables.
