Nice working kit to get your laptop, desktop and SATA (or IDE) hard disk working just with a USB port. Transfer speed is constant and we did not experience any compatibility issue when this tested it. However, I recommend to use this kit as a temporarily or hardware testing solution only, as it is not safe to run a hard disk without an enclosure or PC tower case.

Ownership verified by DX This is THE tool to get for your HDDs

Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: - works, including the AC power adapter
- handy little tool for anyone who needs to access 3.5"/2.5" PATA or SATA hard drives.
- not a bad price (local store sells a better known brand for 150% of DX price)

Cons: - none so far

Other Thoughts: It's actually solid black and not blue as it shows in the pictures on the web site here. This is actually even better because I don't like translucent stuff which in my opinion would only make it look cheaper and worse quality.
The build quality is not the greatest (the casing wasn't fully closed/aligned). I had to press on it really hard to eliminate the gaps between both halves of the case. But overall it looks OK and if it doesn't fall apart or stops working, I'd recommend it.

Bottomline: Useful tool. OK build. Not a bad price.

Pros: - Works great
- Cheap
- Small and easy to bring to jobs
- Smart power solution

Cons: - Would like to have it all in a little bag
- Would have been nice to have a USB extender in the kit. But you can buy that at DX

Other Thoughts: For this price... Just buy it!!

Bottomline: Very helpful cheap tool for a Network/computer admin or a computer "geek"
I use it for extracting data from old hard drives. In my last case I needed it for a old laptop where the OS had crashed and I needed to extract some data.
I have it in my "computer toolbox" that I bring to work. Saved me loads of time.

Ownership verified by DX It "broke" the 3rd time I was using it

Ease of Use: starstarstarstar

Pros: Very useful device. I am a network administrator, and I have to deal a lot with old HDs. I no longer have to open the case just to see the contents of the HD. The job is so much easier now.

Cons: I was going to use the item for the 3rd time when it died. I powered on the HD and by the time I was plugging the USB on the destination computer, I heard a noise. Just after that I could smell something burnt. After the that, the adapter does not turn on anymore.

Other Thoughts: I've asked for a RMA. It's the Chinese New Year's Holiday in China. Let's see how things go.

Bottomline: Good, but no reliable since it broke on the 3r time I was using it.

Pros: Wow, this is pretty useful. You can connect any SATA/IDE hard drive of yours. I've only used it for SATA so far, but it has already proved it's worth. At under $20, it's cheaper than any enclosure I've come across that handles both interfaces. I have yet to plug in my IDE hard drives, but that's just laziness getting the better of me.

Cons: It's kind of unsightly. Don't get me wrong this thing can be really useful, especially for hot-swapping between a bunch of hard drives. It's a great tool for a technician's repertoire, but it doesn't look pretty. Enclosure kits look much better and also have smoother cables. I kind of wish the sata port was right on the cable, instead of having to extend it with an SATA cable, because it results with an odd-looking bend on the wire (since the two cables connect at 90 degrees). The power adapter is also quite short, so that the transformer/power brick hangs suspended in the air when I leave the hard drive 2 feet up on the desk. Then again, you could use your own power cord if length of the adapter is an issue as it is detachable from the transformer/power brick.

Other Thoughts: Less hassle than an enclosure kit if you're going to be hot swapping the drives, but the cost is a bit of ugliness. Though, you're not going to find many (if any) enclosure kits that do both SATA and IDE.
It's probably not a good idea to leave the hard drive out in the open, either -- a lot of dust, and perceptible to magnets and kids or whatever goes crazy in your household. But it connects to plethora of devices, including your optical drives and laptop drives, and is hot-swappable to boot!
Don't try it with USB 1.1... USB 1.1 speeds are rather abysmal by themselves; I'm not even going to bother trying it.

Bottomline: It's cheap, so get it.

* Important Note: The AC adapter that comes with this unit has a power ratting of +5V 2.5A and + 12V 2.5A. Although the USB converter itself supports large 120GB+ drives, make sure your hard disk's power requirement is less than or equal to 2.5A. Seagate 200GB+ users have been reporting that power supplied is not sufficient to power their larger drives. *
