Nice working kit to get your laptop, desktop and SATA (or IDE) hard disk working just with a USB port. Transfer speed is constant and we did not experience any compatibility issue when this tested it. However, I recommend to use this kit as a temporarily or hardware testing solution only, as it is not safe to run a hard disk without an enclosure or PC tower case.

Ownership verified by DX This is _THE_ ultimate tool for me!

Pros: Small size, extremely handy. Supports both IDE, small-IDE and SATA. In other words, I can connect _any_ laptop or computer harddrive via USB to my computer, and get the content of the drive. I can use it as a removable storage solution, bringing multiple (old?) harddrives with me. This could also replace a external CD-/DVD-drive, as I could bring with me an internal drive and just plug it into this.

Cons: Should really come with a short European power cord. Nothing else comes to mind... Should really come with a short European power cord. Nothing else comes to mind... Should really come with a short European power cord. Nothing else comes to mind...

Other Thoughts: As an IT technician, I already have a handful of tools and cables with me when I visit customers. This is certanly going to be one of them! Never know when you need to copy data from a destroyed computer, or just want to look at the content.
My set came as a black "box", with a clear USB cable. Not the black USB cable as the picture gives you the impression of. But that doesn't really matter. I don't have it for the looks - but for the fabulous work it does!

Bottomline: Before I had this I would remove the old HDD and add it into a new system to copy the data. Now I don't need to. I just use the USB connector to make the old HDD into an external HDD and copy the data. Works with all kind of laptop harddrives and cd-/dvd-drives. Buy it! It will some day rescue either yourself or somebody you know!! It's perfect!!

Pros: If you do a lot (or not that much) computer repair, you will need this. As an IT engineer, I work at different locations and come across a of broken computers. Before I had this I would remove the old HDD and add it into a new system to copy the data. Now I don't need to. I just use the USB connector to make the old HDD into an external HDD and copy the data.

Cons: Would be nice if they added a European power cable.

Other Thoughts: There are so much handy IT tools on this site. How am I ever going to fit all of them in my (already big) laptop bag?

Bottomline: Must have for It people!

Pros: - Works plug-and-play under both 32 and 64 bit editions of Windows XP
- Works under Linux
- No additional drivers needed
- If the computer supports booting from USB, it can boot from the adapter
- Power adapter uses standard PC power cable, no weird cables required

Cons: - The power adapter gets very very hot, need to make sure it is not covered or cannot cool down.
- The IDE connector is slihgtly bulky, on some DVD drives, it obstructs plugging in the power connector. Easilly avoided by first plugging power, then IDE.

Other Thoughts: They could have wired both ground wires in the connector instead of only the -5v ground pin. Adapter can also be used for testing computer fans using the appropriate Molex-Fan cables.

Bottomline: Value for money, buy it! It's perfect!
I use this on my DVD rewriter because my PC has no room for a DVD drive. Works flawlessly. Also very good for datarecovery on all types of disk (Laptop, IDE, SATA).

* Important Note: The AC adapter that comes with this unit has a power ratting of +5V 2.5A and + 12V 2.5A. Although the USB converter itself supports large 120GB+ drives, make sure your hard disk's power requirement is less than or equal to 2.5A. Seagate 200GB+ users have been reporting that power supplied is not sufficient to power their larger drives. *
