Pros: - It realy has 5 mantras.- Its pretty good build quality.- Comes with string, so I can be easily worn on your neck.- Has a connector to attach headphones, that's very handy.- Instead of 2 AAA batteries you can use classical universal adapter (You can buy it on DX too).- I was supprised that something such small can have such clear sound. On highest volume you can hear little pop-corn noise, but it's nothing horrible. Maximum volume is quite loud.
Cons: - There is a small flaw (dinge) on the bottom side, but nothing big. Maybe only on my item.- Battery lid can be hard to close, but when you press the box a little, it closes perfectly.
Other Thoughts: - On the paper box and on back side of the product, there is a list of 4 mantras, writen in Chinese. In Tibetian is says it has 5 mantras. And it realy has 5.
Bottomline: - We ordered this originaly for our Buddhist friend. First day we have it my girlfriend was little nervous and this made her calm again. I think I have to order another one for her.
Pros: - You can meditate with it even at work or in public places thanks to the headphone's port- It has a very nice look, with the Avalokiteshvara syllabe seed on it and the Lotus flower.- It's included the most chanted mantra among all buddhists in the world "Om mani peme hum", with Tibetan accent.- Mantras are written on the back of the jukebox both in chinese and tibetan- For the price decent build quality- Great it included the lace to hang it at your neck- Nice box and packaging
Cons: - They are not songs but they are mantras- The mantras are 4 not 5- It's a bit hard to close the batteries lid but being very careful I closed it perfectly
Other Thoughts: It works with 2 AAA batteriesWhen I put the batteries I jumped in fear cause the machine started to chant, lol! So be careful to turn it off before inserting the batteries or else you can jump on the chair.
Bottomline: I don't know how much a non buddhist would appreciate it, I consider it a rather sacred object for the mantras that are chanted and I wouldn't be happy to think that someone makes fun of it.
Pros: This little jukebox will amuse everyone you show it to. If I understood or believed a word that this thing said, I would be very proud to own one. I bought this to show it off, and it is serving its purpose.
Cons: This is less of a jukebox, and more of a chantbox. Some of the "songs" on here are three second looping sounds of chanting. When I first received this, it took much toying around to get the less-than-perfect battery setup working. Not only was the door of very low quality, but the markings inside for positive and negative sides of the batteries were backwards and caused many minutes of frustration and a run to the dollar store for new AAAs.
Other Thoughts:
Bottomline: If you have the money for it, and are looking for a conversation piece, by all means get one of these. If you are expecting something with real songs or easy to follow (a.k.a. Non-Tibetan Script) directions I'd pass on these little numbers.
Pros: My favorite part about this device is that the songs are very trance-inducing. At first you might think they are boring or annoying, but after a few minutes, I start to really tune into the sound-shapes and notice subtle details that are actually very satisfying in an abstract way. Steve Reich would like this. (I haven't tried running several at the same time. Maybe one on each ear?)
Cons: Since this runs off 1 AA battery, it's not super-loud. If you need more loudness, either use headphones, or plug the device into an external amplifier via the headphone jack. Note that Brian Eno says that often it's a good idea to have things like this playing at a just-barely-audible level, adding to the ambience of the environment instead of replacing it.The songs are monophonic. None are very long. The battery door is a little annoying. It's not entirely necessary for the unit to operate, however.
Other Thoughts: Note that I don't speak any Tibetan, and have no idea what the songs say or are about. However, remember it's not "just" an amusement machine. The monk is reciting sacred mantras, so treat it with some respect. I like to imagine the prayers filling the room with goodness.
Bottomline: This tiny device produces wonderful songs for a very small price.
