- Easy to install software and drivers included
- Software written by Microsoft .NET 2.0 which means you can access the dongle/readings in your own .NET software. When plugged in, the device presents itself as a serial port device (with a virtual serial port to access it)
- Driver and software programs are both in English (initial installation and error messages may be in Chinese, but installation is straight forward, see installation guide below)
- USB Specification: 1.1
- Range: -40°C to 120°C
- Accuracy: ± 0.5°C
.
* Note: although the sensor can handle 120'C temperature, the casing will likely be damaged at that temperature. In addition, although the packaging says Hydro-thermometer, the software included does not display humidity and it is not known whether you can access the hydrometer readings by writing your own program.
.
* See installation note under the usage instructions section for important software install guide.

Ownership verified by DX Does its purpose

Pros: - It is the smallest and cheapest device you can get for this function.
- Fitted for most projects involving temperature monitoring, like rooms or furniture with cluttered devices.
- With proper applications, you can access the data remotely (i.e., webpage) and get alerts by mail.
- It is possible to develop your own software for reading temp.

Cons: - The package delivered is slightly different from the one in DX, green background, no software, and no cable. This is not critical for me because the device is OK.
- Do not trust completely on the readings. Remember, it is not intended to be a high-precision thermometer, is just to have a clue. Expect some distortion depending on where do you install the device (how close it is from warm/cool sources).

Other Thoughts: Google for "Temper software" and "temper UTAC" in order to locate several interesting options and applications for this little device.

Bottomline: I tried it on Windows 7 RC1 without problems, so it should be supported for most 32 bit OSes.

Ownership verified by DX Nice way to check the temperature in my attic.

Pros: - Cheap and does the job
- Works like a charm on Windows XP

Cons: No Windows Vista 64bit driver (nor Linux) support
The included software is abit ugly-looking, but I'm going to try to code my own reader software so no biggie. I might take a look at the alternative software mentioned in one of the other reviews too.

Other Thoughts: Got this to get some temperature reading in my attic where my file server is placed.

Bottomline: Worth the money, just too bad about no Windows Vista64 drivers.

Pros: Very, very simple use. Only need put and install software that suport ºC and ºF. Software made in .NET framework, withnout any proctection.

Cons: Bad Linux support. Only Windows. Linux support is only by linux-neerds, now need some changes in kernel. Not is a beautiful acessory.

Other Thoughts: Not good software but have open source with full source, statics and some languages (english, spanish, germany...) alternatives. Actual USB cabe is short, but you can use any other USB cable.

Bottomline: Simple but very useful.

Ownership verified by DX Nice usb thermometer for the price

Pros: Nice compact digital usb thermometer. Works fine, we've been using it 24/7 here at the office for several months in order to control temperature. No problems at the moment.

Cons: The software included is crap, better use alternative ones (see Other Thougths).

Other Thoughts: Download an alternative software such as UTAC http://blog.n4rf.net/solutions/utac
This software brings statistics, graphics, adds a webserver and many other things.
Would be better if Dealextreme had the version of the usb thermometer with hygrometer integrated.

Bottomline: Nice thermometer for the price. Buy it if you are on this kind of stuff.

Usage Instructions Return to top
* Installation guide - please follow carefully:
.
1. Insert the included CD to install the driver and software first (they are named USBRD.EXE and SETUP.EXE). Run USBRD.EXE to install device drivers first.
2. Then, install the software via SETUP.EXE. The software will prompt you to install Microsoft .NET 2.0 Framework (included on CD) if you do not already have it installed. When asked to choose installation directory/folder, you much pick something like "X (your desired driver letter):\Program Files\thermometer TEMPer\". Picking anything else will caused the program to show an error message upon start up (but it will still work despite the warning).
3. Plug in the device.
4. When you first use the device, Windows will prompt you to install device drivers. Simply select "install drivers automatically" and you're done.
5. Finally, start the main software program to see the temperature/humidity readings.
