Ownership verified by DX not that good
Posted by theodouma on 5/19/2009
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: With two NiMH batteries a Q5 led will get more than one ampere of power.
The outputcurrent is adjustable

Cons: with two NiMH batteries the driver needs more than three amps! This means it is taking 7.5 watt from the batteries while it only give 3.5 watt to the led. The driver is getting very hot!
I had two drivers. The first began to smoke when it was using almost 5 amps from two NiMH cells while no led was attached!
Very little space to connect the wires on the driver.
I had a light group with only lo-med- high light output, no flashing or blinking.

Other Thoughts: I was planning to use this driver in my Ultrafire C3 flashlight with two NiMH cells instead of the original driver with a single 14500 cell. But after a few test I decided to keep the original driver and the 14500 cell. The lightoutput is the same while the single 14500 cell is giving me a longer burn time than this driver with two hi power NimH cells.

Bottomline: If I could test this driver before buying it I wouldn't buy it, they are disappointing me.

Ownership verified by DX Nice, Efficient, vairiable output

Pros: -3 Mode L/M/H group without strobes is VERY useful.
-No PWM flicker
-Last Mode memory
-Ajdustable current
-Performance and details are VERY well documented on DX forums.

Cons: -Not plug & play, V+out needs to be bridged over to C1.
-Hyper-strobe mode group gets in the way. IMHO they should replace it with a simple one mode group, off-on.

Other Thoughts: I had no problems soldering the wire jump. It is very well documented and illustrated on the DX forums.
I am using this board with DX6090 and DX11836 and it has transformed BOTH modules. Now I get lower output with the low 10% mode, and with the current set to 1.3A I get more output on high.

Bottomline: Great value, very happy with my purchase.

Ownership verified by DX Nice with 18650

Involvement: Novice (still getting used to it) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Ease of Use: starstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar

Pros: -Low mode (10%) can be made low enough to preserve night adapted vision.
-NO PWM flicker on low modes !!!YEAH!!!, thats my biggest complaint about DX:17593.
-GOOD/efficient/cool running regulation with 18650 cell.
-Low/Med/Hi mode works great and is all I really need.
-The "extended" strobes have their own group, with a L/M/H. This is nice because you don't need to fumble through all 18 of them to get to the mode you want.
-I like the flashing ~10 second "beacon" mode, too bad its not available in the L/M/H group, and the only way to access it is to plow through all the strobes. Bummers!! It would come in handy, making it easy to locate the flashlight.
-Drops right into any DX-P60 module pill.
-Adjustable pot is easy to set.... set it and forget it.

Cons: -C1 needs to be bridged to +Vout, that makes this a big challenge for beginners (like me). So I gave it a low score for "ease of use".
-Takes time & practice to learn the UI. You have to time your button half-presses JUST right.
-The "spring" on the "+" terminal is REALLY hard, its just a coiled up solid core wire. I had to solder a small spring on top of it.
-Measure your pill dimensions carefully, the inductor coil is very tall.
-Mode memory only seems to be very short term. If you leave it off for ~10+ minutes it will operate with a "next" mode memory. I guess short term memory is better than no memory at all.

Other Thoughts: Really impressive. I like this one for its regulated output with an 18650 cell, and its Low-low output at the 10% setting. The low-low mode is my main reason for getting this circuit. I have it set to emit about 12 Lumens at the 10% mode and its JUST right for night vision preservation. I use it in a DX-6090 drop in and it works great. My particular 6090 has a yellow tint thats very soft and easy on the eyes... perfect for night adapted vision ad the 10% low mode.
It too ke a WHILE to figure out the UI. You have to time your half presses just right to mode switch and access the low mode. Once you find the low mode, just wait a couple seconds for it to blip and click it off/on for a second. It will teleport you to the next mode group.

Bottomline: -Nice driver!! I use it for the low-low setting and its a real winner paired with an 18650. So far I have modded my DX:6090 and Lowes Task Force with this board and it has transformed them both.
You can crank up the gain, and really get the emitter cooking at ~1.3-1.4A, pair that with an R2 emitter and you'll have a real retina scorcher.
Make sure you use this in a light with a GOOD switch. You are going to be half-pressing the button all the time, and increasing the wear cycles. So you don't want a failure prone switch to leave you stuck on or off.
It needs adequate heat sinking for high current and long power-on cycles.
