Ownership verified by DX Clever device but defective Li battery inside
Posted by Stratocruser on 7/29/2009
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Very compact, the charge controller inside is VERY sophisticated, not just a linear voltage regulator.

Cons: My Li battery inside started swelling up after a few months and lifted the top right off the device. BAAAAD! Didnt leak though...

Other Thoughts: With a better battery and a captive cable this device would rock. Too easy to misplace the cable.

Bottomline: I will rip out an 1800 MAH Li cell from a closeout obsolete cell phone battery sale item form Radio Shack and install it. Shouldnt have to do this but I refuse to scrap any fixable electronics, thats REAL GREEN practice, not buying something with an organic cotton carrrying case.

Ownership verified by DX Perfect relationship between quality and price

Pros: I use it to charge my mp3 and my cellular phone when I go on a trip to the mountain. In the mountain you haven’t power points. It’s very light and the plastic cover is very strong.

Cons: The charge is low but it isn’t really a problem if you think in the price of this item.
The great problem is the connection. The product have one cable with one connection USB (Ok, perfect), and one connection specific of the battery. If you lost the cable, you can´t use the battery never ever.
The product hasn’t instructions, but you can find it in the post.

Other Thoughts: Hong Kong – Spain in 15 days

Bottomline: Perfect relationship between quality and price

Ownership verified by DX Good for the price, could be better.

Pros: It does what it's meant for, at a very cheap price.
Easy to disassemble.
Easy to use.
The green led brightness depends on the light the panel gets, so you'll easily understand when the panel is charging and when it is not.

Cons: Well, actually I've found many cons. First of all, it takes a very very long time to recharge if not hit by direct sunlight. I left it at daylight for more than a week to have it charged enough to bring my cellphone from 66% to 100%. This also makes me unconfident with the battery true capacity. Second, the connector is not a standard mini-USB. This means that if the supplied cable gets damaged or lost, you'll need to disasseble and sold yourself the connector you want. Third, the lights turn on as soon as you connect the cable, even if no load is connected. This is a useless battery consumption. Finally, the construction is poor and the leds can be confusing (the green led lights when the panel is hit by sunlight, while the red one lights when the battery is in use or is charging via USB).

Other Thoughts: Forget to leave it outside home to better expose to direct sunlight. If it rains, the panel internal circuits will surely get wet. Should you desire to leave it outside home, you'll have to make it somehow water-resistant.

Bottomline: Writing about defects is always easier than writing about virtues. This cheap panel does what it's meant for so it is not a bad product. My defect listing has purpose to let you understand what you must NOT expect from this object, since the description ad Deal Extreme matches perfectly what the object is meant to.

Ownership verified by DX Good backup battery

Pros: --> Very small, smaller than I thought
-->, good for carrying around and using as a emergency battery for mobile phones, ipods, mp3 players, digitalcameras etc.
--> it's solar powered, so you have free electricity!
--> it may be recharged by the usb of pc when there is no sun laying around
--> Lithium batteries, veeeeeery good
--> it outputs 5,45V which is way good!

Cons: --> Very small, solar panel could bebigger for faster recharging and batteries could be way bigger, like 4Ah at least
--> lights are very hard to understand, I really didn't understand then, really tried hard but i don't really know what's happening. When i's on the sun the green light is strong. and thats all.
--> It shouldn't have leds, or they shouldn't stay on all the time, if the solar panel can give 130mah only the led consume 10 at least
--> the cable of my output had the wires inverted so it wasn't chargin anything, had to cut the wire and resolder. its only 2 wires, a red and one black.
-->

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: Good, buy one if you have lots of usb things.
