Ownership verified by DX Good buy for the price

Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: - It works, plays Divx, xvid, mp3 etc
- S/PDIF Raw (coax) output let you play DTS files.
- Tried with three different hard disks and worked fine each of them

Cons: - Video quality could have been better. My Pioneer 393S plays the same divx files with better quality video
- VGA output does not work with LCD monitors (H/V sync out of range)
- Remote buttons are positioned oddly

Other Thoughts: - Component video out would have been better.
- NTFS support would a real plus but not mandatory

Bottomline: For the price, it's a good buy but don't expect wonders out of it. Fine for small size TV.

Ownership verified by DX Simple but effective little player

Pros: Uses good quality chipset (ES6430).
Plays almost everything, even higher bit-rate content.
Has on/off switch - another model I have does not have this and is a real pain to (up)plug.
Excellent build quality - nice finish.

Cons: - The firmware seems to have some issues. The booklet provided does not seem to have much in common with this player.
- As of this writing I was not able to find a firmware update compatible with this player. The booklet says that new firmware will be provided from the site... except no one knows which site.
- The power button on the remote has no effect on the hard disk, it keeps spinning.
- The power supply to the HDD/chipset is passed directly, in other words there is a good change you can burn your HDD/player if you use the wrong power supply.
- There is a switching regulator, but it forms the 3V only.

Other Thoughts: There is a change this player is manufactured by Keelai, but I have not been able to confirm this. The Keelai firmware I tried to use on this player was not recognized.
This appears to be the same player as the one with the card reader, except that the card slot and few resistors were not soldered on.

Bottomline: Good player overall. It's sad they did not enable all the extra features of the chipset (such as USB OTG/HOST).

Pros: The case is really easy to setup, and comes with all the needed cables. With the FAT32 format tool, it was easy to reuse an old 40GB HD i had, and start playing with that toy.

Very easy menu, and usage.

mine came with the E157 ESS chip, so it was easy to fine a rom source and wditor for it.

Cons: it comes in chinese menus by default so you need to figure out how to change it to english by yourself.

The remote configuration is a little wierd - some buttons has functions different then their tags...

Other Thoughts: finally I can show the stuff I have on my HDD wherever I go :)

Bottomline: very cheap for its functions
better then buying a standard 2.5" HDD case
