High-Power 200mW Red Laser Pen (Burns Match + Visible Beam Daytime)

Pros:

-Powerful, I was able to burn through garbage bags, dark printed paper, colored balloons
-Good build quality (good.. not great. See Cons section for details)
-rather inexpensive compared to others of the same rated power

Cons:

-Batteries: this laser takes 2 CR2 batteries, which are often used in cameras. At many stores, they are very expensive. You can get these batteries at many thrift stores, but the quality and power is obviously lower if you buy the cheap ones.
-Build quality: the only thing that keeps this laser from getting a 5/5 rating on build quality is the focusing lens. It is threaded a little sloppy, so it can be a little difficult to fine tune the focus accurately.

Other Thoughts:

I have no way of verifying the actual output of this laser, but it will definitely light matches and burn dark colored materials from several feet away with a good set of batteries. I have read that offshore high-power lasers can emit high levels of IR, so common sense and some means of protection should be used.

Bottomline:

Buy one of these. This is one of the better laser values available in my experience.

Pros:

-Pop black balloons, or just do a black point with a pen in the others...
-It can open a hole in your tv remote (I did it), plastic things that are black are so easy to burn
-Has ajustable focus, a litle sensitive, but is helpful

Cons:

-Its superficie gets a little hot when you keep it on for some seconds
-Eats batteries (I'm using the SKU 932, which lose its capability of holding charge)
-The laser must be with full charge batteries to burn well

Then again, through a malicious accident the police somehow was awared of my ownership and without hesitation confiscated and destroyed the laser and charged me for aggravated assault because somebody MIGHT have been hurt.
So watch the phuck out that you aren't all taking it too easy.

It's extremely cool to burn stuff, and it's an amazing laser if you want to do some burning, but if you want one for show, with a cool beam, you should go for a 100mw green one.

Pros:

Does what it says:
- Visible at daylight (very visible indeed)
- Does not burn matches and paper instantly but takes a very long time. They might burn instantly if you use black colored matches though. I can confirm that it does burn paper pretty easy if you aim at written ink on paper.
-Easy to use. Focusable lense comes in handy
-Huuuugee range ( I used it on the appartment across mine which is definitely over a 100 meters away and the laser was still strong)

Cons:

-Bad build quality. After a day or so the on/off switch is already sort of broken. With a lot of effort I can still make it go on and off but it seems as though there is something wrong with the spring in it. Spring pops back 1/10 times but 9/10 I have a hard time using the switch

Other Thoughts:

The power output (how powerful it may be) is not big enough to inflame light or even medium dark colors. Black does the job though.
Also if the build quality is this bad I had hoped that they would make the case tweakable. As in that you can disassemble it easily for maintainance

Great product. Sort of disappointed that the burning qualities arent what I thought they were, but then again I am not an expert of lasers.

I shipped this high power laser to Europe, and it came in!
No taxes nothing so probably it will just arrive at your home.
Second of all, this thing can burn my pc, my desk, my cables and me shirt! Someone used it on me, on my shirt and it BURNED!

This is an extremely fun toy, and not too dangerous either. When you are around other people, you can safely point it anywhere, as long as you don't point into someones eye, or a mirror/window causing it to reflect.
The only thing it doesn't burn, are stuff in a bright color, or with a shiny surface.

Pros:

Best laser in its class you can ever get for this price. Put simply, it's a bargain. The range of this laser is stupendous. The beam is highly visible at night. Throw the laser into short focus and matches light up within 2-3 seconds, no kidding! The biggest pro for me is that this powerful laser is pocket-sized.

Cons:

Only gripe is that the focusing ring is rather loose. It will be great if there is more resistance so that the focus will stay at current position. However, this is a minor con and not a dealbreaker. As with all powerful lasers, use with caution and brains.

Other Thoughts:

Advised to get safety goggles because the beam is intense. Do not point at anyone! Get rechargeable CR2 batteries and charger from DX for the best experience.

Bottomline:

If you are looking for a powerful, yet affordable laser, this is the laser you'd probably be looking at.

it is a very good laser for the cheapness of it i have so far been able to burn or light a match burn through insulation tape and ingrave through wood not only that it is very cheap and easy to use i would get this instead of thinking about building one yourself.

the screw for lens could be better and would also be better if it took more easy to find batteries because it uses them fast like aa or aaa but you do get what you pay for.

The BEAM is not that visible... but it can be a con if ypou wanna have a beam-visible one... for me it's better so it's hard to notice where is the laser source (in night it can be seen depending on the view angle)

I would like a GREEN laser of 200w.. (much more visible.. burns the same) but woulñd be much more expensive, adding that if the GREEN laser doesnt have a proper IR filtrer, you can be burning your eyes without noticing it ^^ (IR leaking) whit red ones there isnt such danger. P/D: if the tip is too loose, with some "teflon" you can make it harder to focus and get more acurate focusing.

Great piece of equipment, does exactly what it says. Very powerful so do be careful. Focus feature is great, makes lighting things up just that much easier.

Cons:

Unfortunately the diode has dislodged itself after being dropped and at the moment is not functional but entirely my fault. So perhaps the only con is build quality, slightly.

Remember batteries aren't included and from local shops may be expensive, I suggest buying some from DX with your order.

It has a really powerful laserbeam. I assume it has a DVD RW's laser diode, a GaAs 650 nm one. burn matches not a big deal, but this pointer can easily burn through CD covers (black plastic) from 10 meters! I use it in a homemade programable 3D engraver.

Cons:

As a laser has no cons, but hte housing, actualy the focusing head has a little backlash.

Oh, and its price is very good (if you count the wrong DVD writer for the diode, the laser module to run the diode and the beautiful and well structured black ALU case, you will find out that is not worth to make it. ) Buy this ! :)

Pros:

Well I think it's the very best red laser you can buy for less than 30 bucks. If you want the same power it is more 300bucks, but not at DX!
Some people speak about IR-filtration being absent, well a red laser DIODE (like this laser) does not emit in the IR-wavelengths so it does not need filtering (but a green laser needs a IR-filter)
If you focus the beam correctly (turning the ring) you can instantly light matches or pops balloons, it burns everything black (not metal :D)

Cons:

The focusing ring is not very precise it is a bit wobbly but it can be fixed with some home made fiddling I think.
It eats batteries like mad.
the batteries are the same price than the laser in my countty : I am going to buy the battery charger and the batteries from DX for the price of only 1 battery here!

Its's more a "infinite"-light-needle than a light saber in the dark

It is FANTASTIC but you have to revise your lessons about light-reflection/refraction/diffraction if you don't wear special-od glasses! (not advised)

The best thing I like about this product was the casing. built on an aluminum casing and its so durable. Throw it a few feet and still working

Cons:

Batteries so expensive, had the batteries for $36 for two batts. If I were you, buy the charger here and also the rechargeable cr2 batts....much more cheaper compared to $36

the product is good, but think of safety everytime you used it> always and always keep it away from children and never ever ever point it to somebody's eyes or to yours, dont tell me , I told you so

This is a very powerful and bright laser pointer, especially for this low price.
The carrying strap is welcomed.
Focus-ability is essential for a laser being useful, and this is able. The aberration is kept at a minimal.

Cons:

Despite the high intensity beam it can only sufficiently heat dark materials for obvious reasons. Likewise the beam itself is not visible unless dust is present.

Other Thoughts:

The toggle button is actually quite useful.
I successfully burned shapes into plastic, leather and wood. I cut thermoplastics and lighted matches.

Bottomline:

A powerful and focusable laser for a decent price. Too bad it's quite dangerous.

- Clearly visible beam in dark
- Beam also somewhat visible in slightly illuminated room
- Can be used nearly as good with only one 14500 3.6v battery
- Easily fits in the pocket
- Very sturdy and lightweight
- Easy to disassemble
- Easy to use

Cons:

- The on/off button is sometimes a bit rattly when at on position but that's known from before and it's not really a big con
- No other cons for the price that good

Other Thoughts:

Build quality is good for the cost, in fact better than good. Feels nice and solid when you hold it and has great cuts and finish. Some people said their has got loose focus ring but that's not the case with mine, it's nice and smooth. However, tail click button is rattly every now and then like i mentioned in cons but that's no big deal at all. When using it with one 14500 3.6v battery, performance is not much affected, it lights up a match within 3-3.5 seconds when fully charged and precisely aimed as opposed to 1-2 seconds with 2x3.0v CR2s. In emergency it can also be used as a flashlight when fully defocused but be careful when using it that way. Although i enjoy burning capability from time to time, i initially bought it for beam visibility. It's powerful enough to produce clearly visible beam in dark without humid conditions, so it fulfilled my expectations.

Bottomline:

It does everything you hope it would. Just don't forget to use safety gear and some common sense while operating it. Great laser, you get more than what you pay for!

Pros:

This is a very good product with a great price.
Batteries last for a very long time. The beam will be very bright until batteries are about to go completely empty. For the price i paid, I was expecting a laser with a very bad build but I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw the build. It looks like any expensive laser you would buy at overpriced internet sites like wickedlasers.com but the only difference is that at DX you get it at the right price.
The laser beam is EXTREMELY bright, which is good of course. It does what it says. It burns matches, duct tape. It burns anything black really. It is very easy to focus. The little cap moves easily when you twist it.

Cons:

The laser dos not come with any batteries so you have to buy them. This would not be a problem if the batteries were not so rare. I had to order them from DealExtreme and I also had to order a charger from DX. This adds a little over 10 dollars to the original price of the laser.

Bottomline:

Overall this is a great product where the positives win over the negatives by a long-shot. It has a great price compared to other stores, even if you consider the extra 10 dollars you pay for batteries and charger. This is one of my favorite products from DX.

- Very bright, if for some reason your power goes out you can use this as a make shift light. (better than cellphone light)
- Yes, it burns things. Sure they have to be black, but I burned my name in the back of my remote control. It pops balloons within seconds of the light touching the rubber and lights matches with ease.
-Feels like a good build
-Instead of holding down a button you just hit it once and it stays on. (Kind of dangerous)

Cons:

-You need those silly CR2 batteries which DX sells. (get a charger as well) The bright side is, I can just recharge my batteries when they go dead.
-The packaging was kind of lame, since my green laser came with a cardboard box, this one came in a plastic bag.
-Because our eyes can't pick up on red as easily as green the beams pales in comparison to my green one. If you want a laser just for output of light we can see I'd recommend Green. But at peak battery power this one in the dark can still put out a red beam. (Rayleigh scattering)

-You can remove the top part and check out the small circuit board attached to the laser.
-It has a focusing ring.

Bottomline:

If your a budding laser enthusiast, you'd be silly not to have this in your collection. It was my second high powered laser and I've been loving it since day one.

Pros:

- Its a BRIGHT laser
- Can burn stuff/start fires/pop balloons (this is more of a con, cool, but not really a feature you need)
- Cheap, but durable casing
- Doesn't output quite as much as it says (no need to worry about tattooing yourself)
- Great for ground spotting/aerial touring
- Nice and compact
- Fantastic range/throw for something so cheap
- Feels good in hand/fingers
- Will always be able to answer "Which one are you looking at?/Where is it/I'm not sure what you're looking at" etc etc

Cons:

- It can be dangerous/make people nervous if you demonstrate some of the side effects (burning etc)
- Useless for astronomy (good excuse to buy the green one).
- Doesn't output quite as much as it says (could be brighter still).
- I've seen someone dance with a pair of these in the smoke of a concert, and promptly get arrested.
- Need to be super-careful with reflectors and road signs if using it for road touring. It can easily end up in someone's face

Other Thoughts:

You need to remember this device was designed for pointing at objects that you just can't possibly reach/isolate/describe quickly and for that it works quite well. The red beam means it is competing for your attention in the sky, but against the ground, buildings, water and trees, foliage etc it is quite brilliant, especially at night. Emitters in these types of laser don't last that long anyway, so why pay more for better quality casing? You need to buy another or completely re-build within a year anyway (depending on use, obviously).

Bottomline:

Don't expect it to cook you breakfast and you'll get along just fine. Dirt cheap for what it is.

Hard to focus to burn anything fast instead of match, especially if it white :-)

The Laser have an easy to read manual with good illustrations and warnings. Those two 20omW lasers i've bought from DX was super. I have burned alot of stuff and it's very fun to play with.

One of the lasers i've bought the button is not working allways. you have to push several times before it starts/stops.
My solution: Use the end cap, unscrew it and take out the batteries

This one is not really worth ~ $30 for 2 -3 months, I have a 30mW Romisen that I bought at the same time that is as bright, it does not burn stuff but is definitely a much better laser.

Pros:

This laser is one of the best lasers to burn stuff with. It is 200mw. It is bright are most to bright you might have to buy some safety googles if you don't have safety google use some sunglasses there better then nothing at all

there not that much bad about this laser but the button broke in one day it still works but I have to pull the button out of the laser because if I click it it won't turn off

Consumes 310 mA (1.7 W @ 2x2.7V) from batteries. It means 12% efficiency (of course if output power is true 200 mW). Actually this is good value (laser diodes have 15-25% efficiency).

Cool toy. Don't direct beam to somebody's eyes.
