Pros:

It took a while to recieve the fence. None the less I was extremely excited to test it out. I laid out the wire and connected the power to the unit. I then inserted the battery into the collar. The lights did not come on. I thought the battery was dead but my brother wiggled it and it came on for a second. I bought another battery ($10) and it still didn't resolve the problem.
The key feature I liked about it and couldn't believe it had it, given the price, is the anti run through feature which means the unit will recognize if a dog is making a break for it by sprinting through the electronic fence and give him a shock higher than the usual warning. Ideal if the dog is running, distracted, and possibly in danger of getting into other trouble should he get past the fence. Great feature.
I submitted an RMA request to DealExtreme and they asked that I post a comment here to see if anyone else has had a problem. I'd appreciate the help if there is anyone who has some advice.

Cons:

None that I can think of overall.

Bottomline:

For the price it is a no brainer. In Ontario and just across the border in the states these things are easily over $200.

Ownership verified by DX OK, but has some significant problems
Posted by mpthompson on 4/6/2011
Involvement: General (knows how to use it) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros:

Very inexpensive. I bought this to work on a specific problem where my dog would see a person, dog or other animal outside the front of my house and charge the door and front window - causing significant damage with her front claws. I used this to put a perimeter inside the house around the front door and windows. It worked better than I hoped and within two days it my dog stopped charging and now stays well clear of the area. Over a week later and the training is still holding without even using it any more. Even though I used it for such a brief period, I still feel I got my monies worth.

Cons:

Several cons. First, the unit can be activated by electrical noise from other electronic devices such as my TV and desktop computer. This prevented me from using it inside the house without supervision to make sure my dog didn't get unintentionally shocked. Second, the range is not all that great -- about three to four feet from the wire on maximum. This makes me think it might not work well outside to stop a fast running, determined dog from crossing a buried wire. Third, there is no off switch so you have to remove the batteries to power it down. Finally, there is no way to vary the amount of shock to the dog. Despite comments from other users, my unit does put out a fairly strong and uncomfortable shock (I tried it on myself). It would be nice to be able to turn down the shocks or even turn them off completely so the unit just beeps if the dog gets too close to the wire.

Other Thoughts:

I may hack my unit to have an off switch and to operate with just beeping (no shock). The fact the unit has a warning beep for the dog is nice and my dog flees when she hears the beeps before being shocked. That warning beep is enough of a reinforcement to keep the dog trained that I would like to turn off the shocks. Particularly if it can be mistakenly triggered by electronic noise.

Bottomline:

Although not the best engineered or built unit, it does work OK to train dogs to avoid certain areas or to stay within an enclosed area. Unfortunately, the fact it can be falsely triggered by electrical noise from desktop computers and televisions is a big negative for using it inside a house. With such a problem, I don't trust it enough to use it on my dog unsupervised which is very unfortunate. This would be less of an issue (hopefully) if used outside.

Ownership verified by DX Excellent fence
Posted by hroshi on 9/11/2010
Involvement: General (knows how to use it) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros:

Price! The cheapest I found here in Canada is $230 and does not have break alarm or range control. My dog went over the fence just once (the first day) and never after that even if I try to call her or even if there is something tasty or appealing behind the fence. The best think about it is that it does not shock right away, it first beeps, and if the dog continues going it beeps continuously and only then shocks. The wire is very long. The instructions are easy and clear. The flags give excellent visual guide to the dog as to where the danger is. And did I say it is cheap.

Cons:

I wish the collar was not that bulky. I wish it used more popular kind of batteries, like AAA or AA. The snap on the collar sometimes opens as the dog moves and the collar drops, but my dog goes even without it after she learned where she shouldn't go, but if I let her for longer time I still put it on. I needed to fence only half of my yard so I wish it was clearly stated in the instructions that the loop could be a half loop (that is that the wire could run parallel to each other with couple of inches apart - I had to figure it out by myself.

Other Thoughts:

I will have to see if it is Ok when winter comes. I wonder if it withstands -30-40.

Bottomline:

Great product! If you need it DX is the place to buy it.
