Ownership verified by DX Best glue for plastic
Posted by Ghlargh on 3/4/2010
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: -Glues plastic soles that other glues, even glues made for shoe repair, have problems with.

Cons: -The glue is slightly too hard after it sets, it would have been better if it was more rubbery since it is meant to glue rubbers and plastics.

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a last desperate chance to save a pair of shoes where the bottom sole had come lose, and it actually worked.
I didn't even get it to stick with contact cement which normally sticks to almost anything, but this worked.

Bottomline: This glue is great for the types of plastics and synthetic rubbers used in shoes and some other applications, but for most other applications normal contact cement is better.

Ownership verified by DX Very nice quality tweezers
Posted by Ghlargh on 3/3/2010
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: -Good quality steel
-very fine machining
-near perfect alignment of tips (any problems small enough to be fixed with small pliers)

Cons: -Comes too sharp, really really really sharp, has to be dulled slightly or it will just scratch work surfaces and get stuck everywhere.
-Not completely non-magnetic, can be magnetized and will then pick up small items that have high content of iron, nickel or chrome.

Other Thoughts: These are close enough to $30 or more brand tweezers that it makes no difference, except for having to dull down the tips a little.

Bottomline: If you work with SMD these are as good or better than most expensive brand tweezers out there.

Ownership verified by DX a tiny bit tighter than western condoms
Posted by Ghlargh on 12/9/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Really sturdy rubber.
Tighter back ring than western brands (this can be seen as a plus, since the ring can act like a penis ring, making the erection last longer)
No lubrication.

Cons: Unknown storage conditions.
Over all slightly smaller than western condoms.

Other Thoughts: DX brand
flattened width: 52mm
width of rubber ring: 50mm
length: 186mm
RFSU Swedish brand:
flattened width: 53mm
width of rubber ring: 52mm
length: 199mm
These are measurements made by me with no pre-defined system of measurments, they should not be seen as much more than a comparison between the basic size of Swedish RFSU condoms (wich are of a very uniform size for the "standard size" ones) and the condoms made by this chinese company, wich i suppose are of similarly uniform size.

Bottomline: I would probably trust these condoms as much as any "made in asia" comdoms regardless of brand (RFSU are made in Sweden, to a set of specifications much higher than the EU norm)...
but even if you do not, lots of people use condoms with steady partners where the purpouse is more of a "sperm collector" than anything else. Or you can just use them as party balloons...

Ownership verified by DX Fair lighter
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/30/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Great material quality, everything fits toghether perfectly and i can't see any flaws in construction.
Works almost every time, has a hot and steady jet flame.
Good large metal heat-sink to get rid of the burners excess energy.

Cons: This might be a one-time flaw with my lighter, but something inside the burner head is obstructing the gas, the flow is not as good as when i got the lighter, and at one point the gas didn't come out at all.

Other Thoughts: this is by far the nicest looking cheap jet lighter at DX, and it is among the best built. So if you need something semi-stylish for lighting cigars, but don't want to pay a lot, this might do for you.

Bottomline: Assuming that my problem was a one-time thing, this is perfect, buy it!

Ownership verified by DX Great reader, not great thumbdrive
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/25/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Works perfectly with SDHC cards.
Pretty sturdy design.
Compact.
Comes with retail packaging.

Cons: Not as sturdy as the sku.6108 reader, and doesn't come with the plastic protective cover.
Does not have a LED like the specifications say.
SD card sticks out too far.

Other Thoughts: Since the SD card sticks out a few mm. this is not great to use as a thumb-drive, the card can be easily damaged if carried in a pocket.
It has a loop for fastening a carrying strap, but this would be pretty useless too for the same reason

Bottomline: I can't reccomend this, buy sku.6108 instead.

Pros: This is perfect if you need it.
Connectors are good quality.
Works perfectly with all compatible devices i have tried.

Cons: It isn't really a USB to PS/2 converter, it's just an adapter for devices that are made to work on both PS/2 and USB, but only has comes with USB plug. (but i knew that)

Other Thoughts: I have a couple of USB keyboards that were supposed to come with these adapters, but they were missing from the package. These saved the day since i needed to connect them to a really old computer.

Bottomline: You know you need one! Buy it!

Ownership verified by DX Not that well built
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/25/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Very nice jet flame.
LARGE gas tank.
Ability to lock flame on.

Cons: the trigger has a very complicated linkage that is likely to break if you drop it or get the button stuck on something.
The burner has a small metal front piece, the rest of the lighter is made from plastic, this means that there is a very small area to disperce heat. The head heats up quickly and the gas hose inside falls off, this could cause the entire lighter to catch fire.

Other Thoughts: I have had tons of problems with this one, i would not reccomend it at all.
The only real plus is the large tank, wich can't really be used since it breaks if it's used for a long time...

Bottomline: I think all the other semi-large jet lighters at DX are better than this one, get one of those.

Ownership verified by DX two-mode flashlight
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/22/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Worked perfectly at first
Nice hotspot and a lot of spill, pretty much what one needs.
Fits well in the hand.

Cons: After a few weeks, this light started showing signs of having 2 modes, high and low, too bad this ment that there was no "off" mode... the switch never really turned off completely.
I felt from the beginning that the switch in this one was of lower quality than the switches in my other flashlights.

Other Thoughts: This could be just a bad switch or bad casing, the friend i gave it to has not tried to repair the problem yet, but it is rather frustrating to have a light do this.

Bottomline: Maybe find something with a slightly better switch?

Ownership verified by DX Works fine but small gas tank
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/21/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: A very solid and well worked design.
Nice redish jet flame made by heating small pieces of metal in the jet stream.

Cons: The gas tank is extremely small, something like 1cc, it only lasts for 75 seconds. (the reason for the low usefulness rating)
instead of using the trigger, this lighter uses the hammer to light itself. Using the trigger would be more "realistic".

Other Thoughts: This is quite beautifully designed, but it doesn't seem like the designers thought too much about the fact that a lighter is supposed to be used to light stuff, meaning that they should have designed it at a slightly larger scale so that the gas tank could last more than 75 seconds...

Bottomline: If you want a cute but quite useless novelty lighter, this is really nice and well built.
If you need something to light your pipe or whatever you smoke, this holds way too little gas.

Ownership verified by DX Not that good at timekeeping
Posted by Ghlargh on 9/6/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Cute decorative watch for a glass cabinet, kitchen shelf or similar.

Cons: It really isn't very well adapted for use as a keychain.
It doesn't keep time very well, i had it going at least one minute per week fast, that might be fine for a wrist watch that you can set at any time that you walk by a clock, but for something you would want to have standing in a fixed spot, it would be hard work to set it every 2 weeks or more.

Other Thoughts: The clock face looked exactly like the 30cm wall clocks we have in school, but smaller. I mounted it as a wall clock as a joke.

Bottomline: Simply don't buy this if you intend to use it for keeping time, it is a great decoration but not a good clock.

Ownership verified by DX High temperature tape as advertised
Posted by Ghlargh on 9/6/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: It can withstand direct soldering (does not deforme if touched by a 350 C iron).
Perfect for holding hot components in place while soldering.

Cons: Since it is not shipped in any kind of bag, it arrives somewhat dirty, but since this tape is not really ment to be used where the looks of the tape might matter, that's not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: I tested this by attaching it to a copper plane on a board and proceeded to add solder to the plane, when done i removed the tape and there was a sharp straight line with no solder where the tape had been. Both the glue and the tape held up to 350 C direct contact.
I also tried holding some bare copper wire in place while soldering them, works perfectly.

Bottomline: Well... if you need a temporary fastening that can withstand high temperatures, this is for you.

Ownership verified by DX Farily good straps
Posted by Ghlargh on 9/6/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Great cheap straps for Wii controllers or any other stuff you need to attach to your wrists.

Cons: the thin loop that attaches to the controller is a piece of fishing line sheathed in a cloth tube, the cloth tube is very weak and broke allmost every time i tried to insert a strap into a hole in metal, but the fishing line held at least.
Doesn't include a black strap (wich i would concider the most attractive color).

Other Thoughts: Someone commented that the cloth seemed to not have the same thickness all over, i can say that the strap is made from a large cloth tube the same diameter all over, but as it bends at the end it flattens out a little.

Bottomline: You need a couple of wrist straps? Get a pack of these, but watch out for sharp edges when attaching to your devices, they will cut up the small loop.

Ownership verified by DX Great thermal glue
Posted by Ghlargh on 9/6/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: This stuff is perfect for attaching low weight high temperature components to heatsinks or small heatsinks to solidly mounted components.

Cons: Not as good thermal conduction as pure heat grease.
Not recomended for use on PC CPU since the heatsink is likely to pull the CPU out of it's socket unless the heatsink is properly strapped in.

Other Thoughts: I used this to attach 3W star LEDs to heatsinks, they got marginally hotter than when i used screws and heat conducting grease (maybe 1-2 degrees per watt extra), but since i needed to mount 30 LEDs, drilling 60 holes in exact positions was not an appealing concept.

Bottomline: Unless the heat conducting surface is very small or the joint is going to be subjected to great forces, this is perfect.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Usefulness: starstarstar

Pros: Works great.
Looks allmost like one of those talking bottle openers.
Would not attract a lot of attension if left next to a fridge if the idiot sticker is peeled off.

Cons: It has a HUGE sticker on it that says SHOCK, it can be peeled of thou.
It could be much more well made, for example the "speaker grill" could be an actual opening instead of just a small shape in the plastic.

Other Thoughts: Uses an electronic chip and a coil to create a high voltage, but has better power than many other electronic shock items.

Bottomline: Get one, or a couple (people maight break them in anger...)
Peel that damn idiot sticker off.

Ownership verified by DX the new model
Posted by Ghlargh on 8/9/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Great for storing SMD components or other very small items.
Does lock together in 2 dimensions to form large storage modules for separating many different components.

Cons: The new model has been modified to have a small clip on the right side to help the boxes lock togheter harder, this is completely unnessesary thou, since they lock togheter fine even if this clip is broken off.
To accommodate the clip, some of the space of the inside of the box has been taken away in a half cylinder. This means the box is not square inside.

Other Thoughts: The boxes are quite large compared to what you would normally find at an electronics workshop, this might be good or bad, depending on what you are going to store in them.
The boxes are spring loaded to keep the lid open and has a clip to keep it closed, when clip is pulled the lid flips open.

Bottomline: Fantastic at this price even if they are rather large for most standard SMD components.

Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Works for hanging stuff around your neck.
Very strong for a cheap item.
Not uncomfortable.

Cons: These things are made from a piece of zipper that is not sewn to cloth, it works fine, but the zipper doesn't stay closed by itself, if you pull on the end of the string when you have it around your neck it will open.

Other Thoughts: The zipper pullies are kindof stupid, shaped like all kinds of dumb things.
Might be a little too childish looking for some, but great for kids.
Could allso be disassembled and used as normal zippers.

Bottomline: Great to hang kids' bus passes or such around their necks.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar

Pros: Great acrylic glue.
Good strength.
Easy to use.

Cons: Has a very prominent smell of solvents.
Hardens VERY fast, half of the glue hardened on the mixing stick, the other half was going hard within a minute or two. I mixed up about half a CC.

Other Thoughts: The glue hardens to a milky white color.
This will work fairly well in small quantities, but since the hardening process speeds up with larger volume it will harden before it can be mixed fully.

Bottomline: Really cheap glue that works fairly well, but hardens too fast.

Ownership verified by DX Has some problems
Posted by Ghlargh on 8/9/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Lets you use cheap AA cells in place of expensive C cells.
Can be easily altered to work properly.

Cons: Instead of the more typical adapter that just expands the diameter, this model also has a small piece of plastic on each end of the battery making the battery longer.
This also means that if 2 or more of these adapters will be placed in a row, these plastic ends mean that there will be no contact between batteries since they are too far apart.

Other Thoughts: These are allmost useless since they have plastic that cover some of the front and back of the AA cell so that it cannot get proper contact in the battery compartment.
However, they can be altered by cutting the ends off and will work properly.

Bottomline: These are great, but you will need to cut them down quite a bit or they will not work at all.

Ownership verified by DX Not a very good light.

Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Nice gearbox and generator setup.
Does work somewhat.

Cons: The battery is too easy to wear out, we managed to wear the battery dowm to a point where it would no longer hold a full charge and it took only a couple of hours of playing with the light.

Other Thoughts: This is a fairly well made gearbox and it uses a small but powerful motor as a generator, this means that you can hook wires up to the motors and drive the crank.
Useful if you need a small but fairly powerful rotation at a good price.

Bottomline: If you need a light, you will probably get a lot more light-time out of a 10pack of CR2016 single LED lights for $5.
This light is great if you need a motor and gearbox.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar

Pros: Good price.
Small radio receiver.
Uses easy to obtain LR44 button cell batteries.

Cons: Needs a very good signal to work.
Auto scan feature is somewhat dodgy.
Volume control only on headphone cable.
Uses 2.5mm headphone connector so regular headphones will not work.

Other Thoughts: This could be a lot smaller if the pen was not included, and how many would actually use their radio as a pen?
Considering the small amount of components it would be possible to make it a lot smaller by making the PCB more square.

Bottomline: Great to give away to gadget freaks, but not very useful for every day radio listening.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Cheap.
Has the ability to be set to any frequency a standard receiver can pick up.
Long range for one of these transmitters.

Cons: Stops working around 2.5V which means it is almost useless on AAA batteries (these should be considered good until they are at 1.0V or 0.8V, wich means this device should work down to 1.6V or at least 2.0V).
Car adapter uses a 78L05 5V regulator without any filter capacitor which means any interference from the car engine and generator will be transmitted to the device.
Low volume whine even when used on batteries, can usually only be heard when music stops.
Sound quality goes down if music contains too much base.

Other Thoughts: I am using it in a radio unfriendly environment to transmit through 2 walls and a set of steel bookcases and it works fine.

Bottomline: Get one, it's worth the money, but don't expect to get 10/10 sound from it.

Needs a smooth surface to work.
Does not come with the PS/2 adapter that is listed on the packaging.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to use for my server, it is placed so that a keyboard cannot be permanently attached.

Bottomline: Great temporary/server/emergency keyboard.
Not a very good standard keyboard due to keys being unresponsive while typing/clicking fast.

Pros: Cheap and easy to use static release wrist strap.

Cons: The wriststrap itself is not conductive, the device relies on a metal plate on the back of the blue plastic clip to be in contact with your skin. Allso the connector that connects the wire to the plastic clip has a slightly bad connection.

Other Thoughts: When putting togheter a computer or otherways screwing around with sensitive electronics, these things are good to have around.

Bottomline: Great for small jobs, but as usual for DX items, if you are going to use the strap a lot, you might want to concider getting a more expensive brand strap.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Great price for diamond coated cutting/grinding discs. (yes, i have verified them to be diamond coated)

Cons: Coating is uneven and doesn't cover the outer edge of the disc as much as one would expect from a cutting disc.

Other Thoughts: When cutting hard metals or running at high speeds, you WILL need to cool the cutting disc with water or it WILL wear out in a very short time.
I have used discs like this to cut tungsten carbide and industrial ceramics with no problems at all, but the water cooling is completely nessesary to get any lifetime at all from diamond tools.

Bottomline: If you need to make a few cuts in hard materials these are great, but for cutting softer materials you should go for other types of cutting discs, or if you need to do a lot of cutting in hard materials better and more expensive diamond discs would be prefered.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Great flashing beacon for finding objects or places in the dark.
Fairly long battery time.
Very very very cheap.

Cons: Build quality and design makes the slide switch somewhat unreliable.
Not an ideal flash interval for anything, 1 Hz is too slow for most applications, 1/2 Hz would be better, or better yet would be an assymetrical pattern with 1/4 seconds on and 3/4 seconds off or something of that kind. That would allso double the battery time.

Other Thoughts: It would probably cost more than $4 including postage to get a 10pack of just flashing white LEDs, without the batteries and keyring assembly.

Bottomline: Get some of these if you need to leave and then find items in the dark, or mark a dark path temporarily for a party or some such.
Do not buy this thinking it will be a cool personal strobe light for discos.

Ownership verified by DX Great joke
Posted by Ghlargh on 6/3/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Uses a mechanical shock driver, so the shock is much more effective than in the other jar on DX. This driver allso uses an AAA battery so it can supply shocks for a longer time.

Cons: There is no spring loaded action, once the lid is turned so that the shock generator turns on, it will stay on until turned back again.
The bottom of the lid, wich is the cover for the shock mechanism, isn't stuck on very well, mine came off in the mail causing the shock mechanism to be damaged. I did manage to fix it thou.

Other Thoughts: While it is possible to replace the battery, it involves a lot of work since wires are soldered straight to the battery terminals.
When opening the jar, make sure you do not loose the contact tab or you will not get the jar working again.

Bottomline: Great joke at a great price if it arrives in one piece.

Ownership verified by DX Surprisingly well built
Posted by Ghlargh on 5/21/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Exactly the same quality as a real cheap utility knife.
Uses a real mechanical shock generator, more powerful and longer lasting than the electronic kind.
Has a real knife blade that adds to the feel and look of a real knife.

Cons: -It says "SHOCK" on it.
-It has a real knife blade that adds to the ability for anyone getting shocked to hurt you.
-It says "SHOCK" on it.
-While it has a real knife blade, the blade does not lock in the "out" position, neither can it be pushed far enough out to use more than the first part of it.
-It says "SHOCK" on it.
-The "SHOCK" text is engraved into the metal conductor on the bottom as well as embossed beside the button.

Other Thoughts: Would be a good joke if it wasn't labeled as a shock item.

Bottomline: All great, except... It says "SHOCK" on it!!!

Ownership verified by DX Can't get much smaller
Posted by Ghlargh on 5/15/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Handles SDHC, works fine with my 8GB card.
Really small and really cheap.
Only 2.5mm thick, will fit allmost anywhere.

Cons: Since the USB contacts are just etched on the PCB, they will wear off if used daily, however, at this price, you could just buy 5 more when the first one breaks.
I don't quite trust the way the PCB is fastened to the plastic shell, i am worried it will come loose.

Other Thoughts: If you need the reader to be smaller and don't need to fit it to a string or keychain, simply cut the hoop off the end.

Bottomline: Cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap.
Oh yeah, it really doesn't cost a lot of money either...

Ownership verified by DX Actually flies!
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/27/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: A fun toy safe for children old enough not to put things in their mouth.
Fairly easy to put together.
Flies fairly well.

Cons: The adhesive tape supplied with the model is not very good.
The position of the main wings is not mentioned anywhere and is vital to getting the model to fly.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest that you get some adhesive tape of your own to steady the main and tail wings to their fastening points.
You will allso need an open area at least 15x15 meters to play with the model.

Bottomline: At this price it will beat any other flying toy you can get locally, and it includes shipping!

Ownership verified by DX Fair quality bottle.

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Good construction of pump mechanism.
Neat to be able to close a lid over the collection bowl to prevent dust from settling in it.

Cons: The threads where the lid connects to the bottle leaks a lot.
It would be easier to screw the lid on if the part not covered by the freely rotating top part was larger.

Other Thoughts: I have tried using this for solder flux and it seems to work fine, there might be some problems later if flux clogs up the pump mechanism though.

Bottomline: This bottle is great if you can make sure it doesn't tip over or get shaken too hard.

Ownership verified by DX Very neat diamond coated files.
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/26/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Cheap diamond coated files.
Very good where you need to grind something very hard by hand, for example fine tuning things made from glass or tungsten carbide.

Cons: A little rougher than i would have liked, especially if it's going to be used to sharpen something.

The coating of diamond dust should have been made all the way up to the top of the file shape.

Other Thoughts: If you need to use diamond tools for a longer time or if you need a better surface, you should wet-grind, meaning you should have water flowing over the file when you use it.

If you need slightly less rough files, you can grind them down by rubbing them against each other, ofcourse this only works to a certain grade.

Bottomline: At this price, these are fantastic diamond coated files, just keep in mind that they will not last forever, especially if you do not wet-grind.

Ownership verified by DX Wow! What a price!
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/17/2008

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: The price is just fantastic.

Works just as it should, a 3.5mm plug fits snug and secure in the jack and the 2.5mm plug is just the right dimensions.

Allso works for mono 2.5mm to mono 3.5mm.

Cons: One might feel that the 3.5mm jack is a little rough to insert a plug into, but there should be no problems unless you force the plug in at an awkward angle.

Other Thoughts: Perfect for cell phones, mini-radios, mini MP3 players or anything else that has a 2.5mm jack where you'd like to stick a 3.5mm plug.

Bottomline: It doesn't get cheaper than this, and it works, what else can you ask for?

Ownership verified by DX Great price, not as good packaging
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/17/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Fantastic price for 100 cells, these sell at about a dollar a piece back here.

Good batteries when they work.

Cons: Packaging leaves something to be desired, the batteries come packaged on a soft plastic tray and just a piece of paper taped over the top, this leads to some batteries jumping out of their place and coming in contact with both terminals on other batteries, shorting them out.

This means that at least some cells will more likely than not arrive more or less dead.

Other Thoughts: I recieved a pack of mostly dead cells, after a CSE ticket, i recieved a replacement where most cells were dead too, but since i had gotten more of my money's worth even then, i didn't pursue it further. Out of 200 cells, i got about 35 working.

Bottomline: Very good if you don't recieve too many dead cells.

Ownership verified by DX Great light strip
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/17/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Great for lighting under countertops, on top of cabinets or anywhere else you want a soft light spread.

Nice and flexible construction, saves you work compared to buying loose LEDs or LED modules for installing many small light points.

Cons: Not as bright as it could have been, the LEDs are not run at their reccomended 20mA but closer to 10mA

Other Thoughts: We used these to light up a milky white plexiglass counter-front from behind, we bought two red, two green and two blue. These are perfect for this kind of application since they are flexible and give off a soft light.

Bottomline: It doesn't come easier than this for soft lighting or strip lighting even if the brightness could be better at no extra work for the manufacturer.

Ownership verified by DX As good as many brand plugs
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/17/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Great price.

insulates fairly good against sound from the outside.

Nice flexible cable.

Very sturdy metal construction, very unlikely for this part to break.

Cons: The speaker membrane is too air tight, it will crincle and pop a little as the pressure inside and outside differs, such as when inserted into ear or when it moves in the ear.

The voltage/sound-volume response is not as good as with most other earbuds, this means that you will not have as high sound volume at the same setting as with other earbuds. This should not be a problem with any normal player since they generally have very high volume settings.

Other Thoughts: Apart from the crincling membranes and slightly low response, this is at least as good as many $20 earbuds.

Bottomline: At this price, you can't go wrong.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: The same as lights that sell at 10-30 SEK (about $1.50-4.50) per light here.

Great to have on keychain so it's allways with you.

Very durable, i own a few 10-packs and haven't had one break yet.

Cons: Some (average 2 in 10) are a little too sensitive on arrival, they turn on at the slightest touch. This is easily remedied though, by opening it up and bending the LED legs back a little.

Other Thoughts: Great as:
-emergency light
-small present for kid's fish ponds etc.
-LED throwie (even if the multicolor flasher is more fun as that)
-Airgun target?

Bottomline: Great price, great product, no real drawbacks.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Works just as well as the original cable.

Much cheaper than buying a spare from an authrized dealer.

Cons: Material quality is good, but not quite as good as the original cable. The cable itself could be from a softer, better plastic.

Comes with a driver CD wich is kind of an unnessesary expence since the software can easily be obtained through the internet. Skipping the CD would make the cable cheaper.

Other Thoughts: I recieved only the CD first, wich i didn't need, but DX promptly shipped me the cable with the next package, no problems at all there.

Bottomline: Just the thing if you need a spare USB cable for your phone.

Ownership verified by DX Very good throw

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Very thin and nice light beam. Best throw of all small lights i own.

Good output for a cheap AA light.

Cons: Not as much light as the C3, but the light intensity in the beam center is greater because of better concentration.

One of the edges on the head is very sharp, needs to be sanded down not to wear holes in your pockets.

Other Thoughts: It has a forward clicky wich is somewhat unusual and i feel it's more useful on a single mode light than a reverse clicky.

Bottomline: If you need a good far throw but don't want to carry a big light, this one is perfect.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Good flashlight with a fair ammount of light, works fine on both alkaline and NiMh batteries.

Has a rear pushbutton switch instead of a twist switch as many other AA lights.

Sturdy aluminum case.

Cons: Some connection problems in the battery cap, need to remove and screw on the cap sometimes to get it to stop flickering.

Not as bright as the C3

Other Thoughts: Nice smooth light, great as an emergency light, small enough to carry around and uses easy to find AA cells.

Bottomline: I personally like the C3 better, but this one is more solidly built.

Ownership verified by DX Very good at this price
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/14/2008

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Just the same size as a normal cigarette, great for smokers to keep in their pack.

Gas will last for at least one pack of cigarettes.

Cons: It is not possible with normal means to replace the flint, once it wears out, the lighter is worthless.

The gas turns on once the top is flipped meaning that you can easily turn it on in your pocket and be without gas once you need it.

The threads that keep the back plug on are somewhat weak, it is easy to push the entire lighter out of the white metal tube when filling it if you don't hold on to the top of it.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: Cheap and cute as a novelty or emergency lighter to keep in cigarette pack, not very good as an every-day lighter.

Ownership verified by DX Well worth the money
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/14/2008

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Very small, very cheap servos.

They respond fast and fairly accurate.

Cons: They tend to jiggle back and forth a very short bit when they are supposed to be stationary, even though a perfectly stable signal is used, this is most likely due to the potentiometer not being perfectly fixed to the axle.

This is not a major problem for RC or other short time uses, it only becomes a problem if used as a permanent installation somewhere where it will allways be turned on, in wich case it will wear itself out within a few days or weeks.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: These would be great where you need a tiny servo, but don't expect it to be as powerful as a large standard servo.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Nice and flexible, easy to mount.

Built-in resistors, no need to worry about burning out the LEDs.

Cons: Not quite as bright as they could have been.

Some LEDs stopped working on one of the strips after a few hours of testing, but no more stopped working after that.

Other Thoughts: I bought a couple of these in three colors to mount behind some semi-transparent plexi glass a few months ago, aside from the few LEDs that stopped working at the start, they have worked fine since.

Bottomline: Very nice for lighting under counters or behind frosted glass, or when you need a lot of LEDs but don't want to solder all of them yourself.

Ownership verified by DX Good entry signal
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/14/2008

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: The entry alarm works very well for it's intended application, it is fairly sensitive straight forward from the sensor and about 3 meters out.

It is easy to set up and uses standard batteries.

Comes with wall-mounts and screws, all you need to fasten this to something wooden near the door.

Cons: Very narrow sensor field.

Doesn't have a DC power input.

Doesn't have an alarm siren mode.

Other Thoughts: The entry alarm has a "ding-dong" sound and a "ding-dong-hello-welcome" sound.

Bottomline: If you need something to tell you when someone enters a door or an opening, but don't need absolute accuracy, this is great.

Not good at all as an actual alarm where you need it to go off every time someone walks in the sensor field since the field is so narrow.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Simple mechanism, a child can work it with little or no help.
It can allso be easily repaired if something comes lose.

High capacity, has 12 pegs for holding rubber bands.

Low price.

Cons: Build quality leaves something to be desired, the plastic parts are nice but they are mounted to the wooden gun using wooden pegs and these are not allways straight or securely fastened, meaning that the mechanism may get stuck or come loose entirely on some guns.

The "wood stain" is actually achieved by burning the wood, so they are quite sooty when they arrive, may be nessesary to sand down the guns before letting children use them to avoid soot stains all over the house.

Other Thoughts: To make the less well made guns work it may be nessesary to remove the wooden pegs holding the mechanism, re-drilling the holes and replacing the pegs with longer ones that can go entirely through the gun, and glueing them in place.

It may allso be nessesary to glue the barrel onto the gun.

Bottomline: If you are somewhat handy with simple repairs, this might save you a lot of money compared to buying expensive toys sold in the west, but if you are not handy with repairs, expect about every other gun to have problems.

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Small and easy to bring along, uses easy to obtain AAA cells.

Cons: Not very bright, enough to find your way in a dark passage or finding dropped keys, but not enough to work by.

It is allmost exactly as bright as the sku.1253 keychain lights, but will have a lot better battery life.

Other Thoughts: This light is an allmost perfect candidate to mod using sku.7881 and a P4 LED (i have tried, that driver circuit will burn out the original 0,5W LED using a 1.2V NiMh).
You might have to throw out the mode board, but the driver board should definately fit in this light.

Another thought is to use a P4 and a 10440 battery, but then you'd have to make sure the battery does not run low because those cells are unprotected.

Bottomline: Very well worth the money it cost, and one of very few AAA rear clicky lights of this size.

Ownership verified by DX Best 2ch copter so far.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: This is the best helicopter i have tried from DX, and i have been through sku´s 2368, 5600 and 2378.

It is really easy to fly for a 2ch copter.

Cons: The usual problems, they do tend to be hard to control, and the internal batteries wear out fairly fast due to too much power being drained.

Usually this is due to the helicopter crashing in such a way that the rotors get stuck, but the power does not shut off immediately, so the battery is overloaded for a short while every time you crash.

Other Thoughts: This one is allmost the same as sku.5600 but of the ones i got, this is slightly more stable in the air.

Bottomline: If you need a small IR helicopter, grab this or sku.5600

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: This is one of the nicest helicopters at DX, it has a strong lift and flies very smooth. It doesn't have a high speed forward but is very easy to control and responds fairly rapidly to controls.

Cons: The internal battery has a tendency to wear out, especially if the helicopter falls so that the propeller is stopped, but the motor doesn't shut down. This overloads the battery and puts heavy wear on it.

Other Thoughts: This is allmost as good as sku.4378, wich i have even better control over, but the differences are very small.

Bottomline: You need a single helicopter? Get this or sku.4378

Ownership verified by DX Great copters, but needs large space.
Posted by Ghlargh on 4/13/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Cheap and fairly easy to control.
Great price for a pair of IR helicopters.

Cons: They are slightly too heavy in the nose so they move fairly fast forward, this means that you will need a large (10x10 meters) room or a wind-less day outdoors to play with them properly.

Somewhat hard to control, but most of these helicopters are.

Other Thoughts: This helicopter will select the channel it uses when it is turned on, it will use the first channel it is contacted by.

The way to make this work is:

0. make sure both helicopters are charged, both remotes have working batteries and ALL 4 items are turned OFF.

1. set the two remotes to different channels, for the sake of argument let's say A and B.

2. turn on ONLY remote A.

3. turn on ONE helicopter and try to operate it with remote A until it spins up.

4. turn on remote B.

5. shield the second helicopter from remote A by going past a wall or simply turning off remote A for a while.

6. turn on the second helicopter and try to control it with remote B until it spins up.

7. start playing.

Bottomline: Great cheap toys, but don't expect to be doing any aerobatic tricks other than "Flying fairly smooth" and "Hitting a wall, flapping madly and falling to the floor"

Ease of Use: starstarstarstar

Pros: It's a good wick with many thin copper strands.
The price is very good for something like this.

Cons: This wick has none or allmost no flux in it, making it hard to get the solder to stick to it and start flowing with the capilary effect.

Other Thoughts: If you want this wick to work a lot better, just dip it in liquid rosin flux and let it dry before using it, it will work at least twice as good, probably better.

Bottomline: This is great, get it if you need it, but grab one of sku.4697 and desolve it in about 50-100ml of cleaning ethanol to get liquid flux that you can dip your wick in to get better results.

Pros: This is one of the best shock gags out there, there are lots of pointers with laser and white light, and some of them look mostly like this, there is simply no way to realize this is a shock gag without having seen it before, or trying to take it apart.

Cons: The build quality and design could be a little better.

When removing the rear cap to replace batteries, it is very likely you will damage the wire lead that connects the cap to the high voltage supply.

The laser module is a little brittle, the lens unit is glued to the LED and the focus setting is glued stuck. The lens unit broke lose on one of mine, and glueing it back in place in the exact right focus was not easy.

Other Thoughts: Some of these come in red paint, some come in blue, if you are lucky enough to get the blue one you can just tell whoever you hand it to that it's a blue, red laser pointer without telling any lies, and they will try both buttons thinking one is red and one is blue.

Bottomline: If you need a shock gag, this is the one to get. Now buy three! Right now!

Ownership verified by DX Pretty much the best i have seen.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: This is the best test hook of this kind i have seen, it opens fairly wide and closes firmly where many other models tend to lose their hold.

Cons: If i had to find something wrong, i'd say the top could stay on more firmly, byt if a thick enough wire is used, it will hold the hat on with no trouble.

Other Thoughts: Would be nice in a set of 5 red and 5 black, or a set of 2 each of 5 different colors.

Bottomline: These are probably the best test clips of this kind you are going to find anywhere near this price.

Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Nice looking pen that writes very well, it doesn't seize up while writing, generally a good pen.

The ink gets completely invisible on the unbleached papers i have tried, allthough a little slower than advertised. It allso works perfectly on skin.

Cons: The ink does not get entirely invisible on bleached paper, maybe there is a chemical reaction between the ink and the paper, i don't know.

Other Thoughts: This ink has a moisture sensitive pigment, it stores moisture from te air, and when enough moisture has been stored, the ink is mostly invisible.

Bottomline: These are fine if you write on paper where it works, the downside is that you will have to try it out beforehand, so you can't just sign something with it and be sure it will disappear.

Great for you girls who get asked for your number, just whip out this pen, write it on the boy's hand and it will be gone in a short while... Maybe use a false number thou, because they may just be desperate enough to memorize it...

Ownership verified by DX Cute but very large

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Very nice quality, hard polished steel with no unwanted sharp edges to cut your mouth.
Very cute design, puts me in mind of japanese ramen for some reason.
Comes in a nice gift box.

Cons: The fork is somewhat large, wich is strange since this product has to be ment mainly for children, i wouldn't think a small child could easily use this fork.

Other Thoughts: This product would be much more useful if the fork was made to a childs scale.

Bottomline: If you feel like getting some real cute tableware, or if you just have a child with a large mouth and a liking for cute cuttlery, this is just the thing for you.

Ownership verified by DX Easily modified.
Posted by Ghlargh on 2/14/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: star
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Very cheap.

Extremely crash resistant, i must have crashed this thing about 80-100 times and the worst thing that has happened is that a small stabilizer rod has jumped off it's fitting, easily put back.

This helicopter is identical to the PicooZ, so much in fact that i believe they are the same product, made by the same factory.

Cons: As it comes out of the box, it's movement is very sluggish and it doesn't climb as fast as one might want.

It is very easy to turn left, but you really need to work at it to turn right.

Other Thoughts: I found that removing all the styrofoam behind the rotor, including the small plastic cups covering the gear wheel, will make it a lot more controllable and extend the flying time significantly. Please be aware that this operation will void any warranty this copter might have.

If you rip all the styrofoam off, you will get a great deal of lift, but the helicopter will start to act like a pendulum and be allmost uncontrollable. This can be remedied by adding a fin straight down around the middle. Mine is made from aluminum foil and about 5x5 cm. Allso, you might want to make some landing legs.

Bottomline: A very cheap toy that works as well as the brand items, and can be a lot of fun modifying.

Ownership verified by DX Great product at a great price
Posted by Ghlargh on 2/14/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Very high quality lighting strip in aluminum profile with screw brackets at ends. Comparable products go for at least four times the cost here in sweden.

Can be cut in 5 places along it's length without harming the function of the strip, very useful when your intended installation site is not an even number of 52cm increments.

Cons: The strip board has connections at both ends, but unfortunately the whole board is covered in epoxy, making it really hard to get to those connections if you want to connect several strips together into one length.

Other Thoughts: These run at about 20mA per LED, so they should last the full LED stated lifetime, wich means between 2 and 11 years of constant light.

The yellow wire is positive (common anode) and the red, green and blue wires are the negative connections for their respective color.

Bottomline: These are the best things out there for lighting under the edges of counters, along the edge of the ceiling and such.

Ownership verified by DX Nicely working but directional light
Posted by Ghlargh on 2/14/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Cheap and ready to use.

Gives a fairly even light in the forward direction.

Can be easily cut between every third LED without harming the function of the strip.

Solidly molded in soft plastic, wich means waterproof if ends are sealed.

Cons: Contrary to what you might think from the pictures, this is not a strip of 5mm flat LEDs, it is standard 3mm LEDs with a flat rubber top molded on, this means that the light will be more directional forward than from a flat LED.

Other Thoughts: i measured one of these to about 1.2A, that's 10mA per LED, wich means they run at half their rated current.

Bottomline: Buy this and it's red and blue companions if you need to make an RGB installation with flexible waterproof strips.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: If you need something to catch someone's eye, or just want to give away something that is utterly useless, this is for you.

Ownership verified by DX Works perfectly

Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: less than 1 day

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Uses generic USB storage drivers, meaning you do not need to download drivers for it.
Does what it's intended for with no problems.

Cons: The picture showing you wich way to insert your card is printed the wrong way (for MS, right way for SD).
Somewhat tricky to figure out how to insert the card.
Hard to get the card out of it (the whole card goes inside the reader)
The plastic lid for the card slot is of terrible quality, all the clips and fastenings on mine pretty much fell off.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: If you don't mind ripping the slot cover off and doing some fishing to get your card back out, this thing is perfect.

Cons: Only has about the same energy/volume ratio as regular NiMh AA cells, it should be a lot higher.

Other Thoughts: Great if you need boosted performande for unregulated 1AA LED flashlights that can handle the higher voltage (thus giving you more light)

Bottomline: Great batteries for the price.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: The flux works for it's intended purpouse.
It is fairly easy to apply and melts to a liquid when heated, spreading the flux over the heated area.
Residue not as sticky as pure resin flux.

Cons: Not as effective as normal resin flux.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: If you need flux paste that is not acidic, this would probably do as well as any other.

Cons: Leaks easily.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Cheap bottle for use with, for example, liquid soldering flux.

Cons: The cap will not make a seal because it is too long, had to cut 2mm off the bottom of the cap to get it to seal properly.
The brush tip is not fastened into the cap but is just stuck in there, this means that it is fairly easy to push it into the bottle when brushing with it.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: You may need to attack this thing with a knife and maybe some glue for the brush before it is fully usable.

Pros: Cheap thin desoldering wick.

Cons: Mine had absolutely no flux on it so it would not absorb any solder, this was however easily remedied since i ordered some resin flux at the same time, i just dipped the wick in liquid flux and it worked like a charm.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: If this is indeed coated in flux and the fact that mine came uncoated is just a mistake, it is agreat deal at this price.

Ownership verified by DX Perfect flux
Posted by Ghlargh on 1/14/2008

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Pure pine resin (most non-etching flux is made from this)
Cheap cheap cheap.

Cons: Packaged as violin resin.

Other Thoughts: This is packaged as violin resin, for coating the bow on bow-string instruments, but it is the exact same resin that is used as soldering flux.
The easiest way to use this as flux is to break it up into smaller pieces and dissolve it in over 95 percent pure alcohol and then use whatever means to apply it to components and PCB before soldering.

Bottomline: Buy this if you need to make liquid flux.

Ownership verified by DX Great when it works
Posted by Ghlargh on 1/14/2008
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Great 1.2W flashlight.
Takes anything from 1.2 to 3.7V batteries.
Does not drop in intensity if lower voltage batteries are used.
Really good switch regulator chip.

Cons: Bad solder joints on switch board, had to re-solder these to get the lamp to stop dimming and turning itself off.
The inductor for the step-up converter is a large trough-hole-mount component soldered straight to SMD pads with cheap solder, this is probably the main reason for faliures in this lamp because any strong jolt or vibration can cause these connections to crack.
Slightly to sensitive pushbutton.

Other Thoughts: If the driver board in this lamp was soldered using high-quality solder, it would be perfect as a long-runtime medium output lamp.

Bottomline: If you need a small lamp with long runtime and want to be able to use batteries from any store, this is for you, but don't hesitate to send it back if it starts to flutter, it will get worse once it starts.

Cons: The candy is not real, it's just foam plastic :D

Other Thoughts: To change the batteries, carefully pry the lid off the jar and then unscrew the bottom of the lid.
It takes 4 x AG3.

Bottomline: One of the best shocking items, get some for your friends.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Very good earphones for the price, fair sound and they handle more volume than my ears can take.

Cons: They do not fit in the ears as well as a $30 pair of "Koss the Plug" with "Pro Eartip", they especially fall out mor easily due to the earplug being made from smooth plastic rather than latex rubber.

The db/W responce is actually very high, this means that a volume that would normally be just "high" could permanently damage your hearing with these earphones. I find myself using the lowest three levels on my MP3 player in fairly quiet rooms.

Other Thoughts: Great for people with latex allergy because the earplugs are made from plastic (PVC or polyurethane i think).

Bottomline: If you don't need $30+ of sound reproduction and plugs that stay in your ears like glue, grab a pair or three of these.

Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: more than 1 month

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: star
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Extremely cheap.
Some of the gags actually works.

Cons: Most of these gags are completely useless.

Other Thoughts: I got:
-Blood capsules - gelatine capsules with a white powder that turns red when mixed with liquid (spit)
-Broken window - a sticker that is supposed to make a window look broken, total crap.
-jumping beans - cute, nothing else
-Hot toothpicks - untested
-Sneezing powder - untested
-Itching powder - untested
-Petrified cigarette - small steel rods that are supposed to keep the ash from falling, letting you smoke a whole cigarette with all the ash staying on
-Fake cola drink - untested
-Dirty face soap - untested
-Invisible ink - untested, probably just citric acid.

Bottomline: this set is pretty dissapointing, but if you need a set of stupid worthless gifts for, say, a fishing game at a kids party, these may be acceptable even if i would go for a few packs of flashlight keyrings instead.

There is nothing that keeps the top from falling off the bottom entirely.

Bottomline: I will not get any more of these since they didn't do what i wanted them for, i will try the yellow 10-pack (sku.7218) next.

Pros: Extremely cheap toy.
Good build quality.
All the lamps worked right away.

Cons: The ink gets a glossy finish on smooth paper unlike some of the more expensive "invisible ink pens" (five or ten times the price of these)
The ink arrives slightly too dry.

Other Thoughts: I ordered five of these, one turned up minus the ink sponge but DX sent a replacement with the next order and no fuzz.

If the writing gets weak after a while, just open up the rear plug and drip in a few drops of water, not too much or it will just wash all the ink out.

Bottomline: Great for secret messages, partys with UV light (draw on yourself) and for children who like to draw on the walls etc.

Cons: A screwdriver this small would work better with an instrument screwdriver handle (one with a rotating top), the square plastic handle is a bit awkward.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: If you need to unscrew small trigram screws, it will not get cheaper than this for the quality you get.

Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Well built.
Good looking.
Fairly cheap.

Cons: Very little ink.
Half the batteries DOA.

Other Thoughts: Arrives with two sets of batteries, one set in the lamp, one spare. The set in the lamp will most likely arrive allready dead.
While the ink may seem to run out quickly, the pen can be made to work a lot longer by removing the rear plug from the ink cartridge and dripping a few drops of water in it since the ink is water based and seems to be fairly dried out. Don't add too much water or you'll just ruin it.
Uses 3 x AG3 cells.

Bottomline: Must have for any pen case, but grab some extra batteries.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstar

Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Fairly well working tracked toy.
Great cheap dual track base for making an RC tank or tracked robot.
Has the exact same base as sku 8250 but is cheaper.

Cons: Can drop it's tracks fairly easily.
Uses button cells that don't last too long.

Other Thoughts: I bought 3 of these and all worked fine.
I will rebuild these into tracked RC toys using lithium cell phone batteries and RC parts from mini RC cars.
I would recomend: 1. moving the front wheels as far forward as possible to get greater tension on the tracks. 2. cover the driving wheels in silicone or other rubbery substance for greater traction.

Bottomline: Great toy as is, or brilliant cheap dual track base for robots or RC.

Ease of Use: starstarstarstar

Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Cheap and fairly well working tracked toy.
Great for building your own tracked robot or RC tank.

Cons: The tracks come off too easily.
Should really have been built for better batteries.

Other Thoughts: I threw out the track-following feature and mounted the RC components from a tiny RC car in the chassi to get a small RC tank, i allso replaced the 4 button cells with a cellphone lithium battery.
I allso made a new front axel further forward for the track and covered the driving wheels with silicone to prevent it from dropping the track or loosing tracktion.
Of the 4 button cells, 2 power the control logic and 2 power the motors, so you usually only need to replace 2 cells.

Bottomline: Great as a kids (or grownups) toy, or as a base for making a cheap tiny RC tank or robot.

Pros: Fits most standard multimeters with jacks for "safe" connectors.
Nicely shaped and standard sized test handles (fits the holders on my high-end instrument).

Cons: The wires are made from a slightly too hard plastic.
The leads have a lot higher resistance than brand leads, these have about 110 mOhms while a pair of Fluke leads measure 28 mOhms.

Other Thoughts: These are fine for everything except high current measurments or current measurments where low voltage drop is critical.

Bottomline: These are cheaper than anything i have found around here, and the cheapest of those had a lot worse quality.

Pros: Extremely cheap.
Seems to be the same LED flashlights that sell for $1.50 - $5 here.
All worked fine.

Cons: Some may be slightly too easy to trigger, meaning that they may turn on in your pocket, draining the batteries.

Other Thoughts: While replacing the batteries would be rather easy, it's not worth it when 10 sets of batteries (20 x cr2016) costs $3,66 and a set of 10 new lamps costs $4.99.

Bottomline: If you need a few cheap disposable UV lamps, grab a set of these.

Ownership verified by DX Unbelievably cheap.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Extremely cheap.
Seems to be the same type that sells for $1.50 - $5 here.
Most work perfectly.

Cons: One or two were too easily triggered, had to open them up and alter the position of the LED.

Other Thoughts: Replacing the battery is very easy, but seeing that a pack of 20 CR2016 costs $3.66 and a pack of 10 new lights (with 20 batteries) costs $4.68 i don't think anyone would bother.

Bottomline: If you need a cheap disposable keychain LED light, get a pack of these.

Pros: All cells measure over 1.55V.
Good packaging that prevents short circuits and damage from moderate postal violence.
Very good price.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Other Thoughts:

Bottomline: These are probably the same cells you buy for at least a dollar per piece in other countries, unless you buy western brand name cells.

Ownership verified by DX Works great

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Innovative conduction activation (starts flashing when liquid is poured on the conductors at the bottom).
Works with strong alcohols such as vodka as well as water or soda.
Batteries should last a few hours at least.
Waterproof.

Cons: Battery lid glued shut, very hard work to replace batteries.

Other Thoughts: It would be quite possible to replace the batteries by prying or breaking the bottom open, but i am going to avoid that until i have to.

Bottomline: Great but quite useless item.

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Stinks of plastic softener (smells something like diesel)
Not very convincing
Gum paper does not cover the metal all the way in.

Other Thoughts: I bought these for the... unique text on the gum packs, "Cock mint".

Bottomline: I would not recommend this other than as a novelty chinglish item.

Ownership verified by DX Good for the price.
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/22/2007
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Really cheap for a rechargeable player.
Single chip MP3 decoder, FAT16 controller, SD card reader and USB controller. Perfect for building small audio-playing gadgets.

Cons: Fairly loud hissing sound when turned on.
VERY picky about wich type of FAT16 file system it accepts.
Not very good build quality, the lever on the power switch broke off inside the player.
Arrived with instructions for AAA version with two indicator LEDs but only has one LED.

Other Thoughts: I bought this player to mount in a box on the wall to play one single song, for this kind of speciality applications it is perfect and easy to get working once you get the right type of FAT16 on your SD card.

Bottomline: You could probably not get even the controller chip at this price unless you bought a lot of them.
Don't get this if you listen to a lot of music or are looking for quality, but if you need a throw-away player that you will not cry over losing, get this one.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Protected cells at a great price.
Handles well over one amp of current.

Cons: The protection circuit makes the cell slightly longer and wider than an actual RCR123A cell, might not fit all lights.

Other Thoughts: I use a charger built to specifications, so the overvoltage protection never comes into play, and my lamp is direct drive, so neither does the undervoltage protection.

Bottomline: These are as good as any protected rechargeable CR123A you will ever find at this price.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Good price for a LiIon cell with protection circuit.
I accidentaly tried the short circuit protection by measuring current instead of voltage over the cell, so i know that works...

Cons: The protection circuit and wiring makes the cell slightly longer and wider than an actual 18650.

Other Thoughts: I charge these using a purpouse built charger chip so the over-voltage protection never comes to play, and my flashlight for this battery is a direct drive so i never go under minimum voltage either, so those features remain untested.

Bottomline: Great cells, great price.

Ownership verified by DX Good light, but not the best machining.
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/15/2007
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Very bright with a newly charged battery.
Small enough to carry around in your pocket everywhere.
The three brightness levels are great if you want to avoid burning your eyes out at night.

Cons: The threads holding the back end on are too short and badly machined, there is less than two turns to remove it.
The front threads are glued stuck so you can't remove the head at all.
It has no voltage switching circuit to keep the light intensity up when the battery voltage runs down.
The strobe and SOS modes are useless except for annoying people.

Bottomline: There are better torches on this site at around the same price, get one of those instead.

Ownership verified by DX Very obvious, but works.
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/15/2007

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: It does work.

Cons: It does NOT use an AAA battery but uses four AG3 cells and an electronic circuit instead of the older AAA electromechanical unit.
The designer of this thing probably never saw a real pack of gum, it is not very realistic.
The packet says "shock" and "pull here" on it, clear give-aways.

Other Thoughts: This gag could work a lot better if stuck inside a real pack of gum.

Bottomline: Don't waste your money, grab the shocking pen or the cigarette lighter instead.
sku 8566 or 8573.

Ownership verified by DX The best shock gag since the pen!
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/15/2007
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: It looks and works just like a normal cheap lighter.
The electrical shock can be turned off to "demonstrate" that it is just a normal lighter.
The shock is not large enough to hurt, but it is very annoying and induces an allmost irresistable reflex to let go of the button.

Cons: The bottom conductor is rather small, a full metal casing insulated around the button would be better.
The "metal" parts are just copper-chromed plastic meaning that the metal finish will rub off with time.
The shock may be too weak for some.

Other Thoughts: I managed to get 4 people shocked in few hours with this, and noone suspected a thing.

Bottomline: This is the most convincing shock gag since the shoching ballpoint pen, noone who hasn't seen this thing before will suspect it as being a shock gag.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Great bright light.
Easily replaced batteries.
The swich on the ones i recieved is fairly hard to activate meaning it is not likely to turn on in your pocket.

Cons: The switches are probably hard to work for someone without a lot of finger strength.

Other Thoughts: The narrow beam makes this more useful at a distance than the regular 5mm LED keychain flashlights.

Bottomline: At $3.50 for 5 lights, you really can't go wrong.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Fairly accurate, Cheap, Small,
Handles heavy weights for it's size.

Cons: Somewhat skewed mounting of the plate, it is not straight on the base and it is mounted too high so the protective lid pushes on it.
It is not absolutely steady, it can change as much as half a gram up or down without outside interference.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for putting coins in paper tubes at the local student organisation, it's small size and high capacity makes it perfect for this task.

Bottomline: Great cheap small scales, buy one if you handle coin tubes, it makes the job a breeze.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: Great narrow beam for lighting objects at a distance or lighting up near objects brightly.
Very bright with fresh batteries.
Has no regulator circuit to break down. Has dual brightness with series resistor.

Cons: Has no regulator so brightness will drop fairly steeply as battery starts to discharge and then level off.
Too narrow beam to use at close range or as a normal worklight.

Other Thoughts: Does work with the longer protected 18650 cells.

Bottomline: Great torch for guard duty or other circumstances where you would like to light up small objects brightly at a distance.

Ownership verified by DX Cool gadget
Posted by Ghlargh on 11/8/2007
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: star
Overall Rating: starstarstarstar

Pros: It works and should keep working for a long time.
Would make a good "eternal" beacon for use in near completely dark environments such as basements.
Could serve as an emergency reading light for short texts or short distance work light in absolute darkness, at least it works for me after getting used to the darkness.

Cons: Fairly expensive.
Does not have many uses.

Other Thoughts: This really gives you a new perspective to the size of atoms, this little tube has to be continously struck by at least thousands of beta particles (electrons) every second to keep it glowing, and this goes on with a half-life of over 12 years. That's a heck of a lot of atoms.

Bottomline: Pretty useless, but still cool for it's uniqueness, i do not regret my purchase, but one is enough, i will not get any more.

Bottomline: Great as novelties, not as great for games.

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Cheap christmas light net using unfocused LEDs.
Several more or less irritating flashing or fading modes.

Cons: "continuous" glow is actually switched at 100Hz (2*50Hz mains frequency), making it slightly irritating if it moves around.

Other Thoughts: Mine arrived with one LED shorted out, this is a fairly usual occurrence with modern high intensity LEDs, i simply replaced the LED and left it at that.

Bottomline: Buy one, buy many, these are great.

Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: star
Usefulness: starstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstar

Pros: Cheap and quite powerful 1W LED torch (for the 2 minutes it worked).
Uses easily available AA batteries.
Very high quality aluminum casing for the price.

Cons: Very cheap construction, there is no regulatory circuits, the switch unit only concists of a single ferrit with two coils and a weak transistor. Not completely unlike the joule thief at http://www.emanator.demon.co.uk/bigclive/joule.htm

Other Thoughts: My torch worked for about 2 minutes, then it started fluttering and died.
I would probably have gotten a replacement if i had sent it in, but being a tinkerer i broke it apart to see how it was made. At this price i don't really care about getting a replacement.

Bottomline: Had i known of the very shoddy construction of the switching circuit i would have ordered a more expensive torch, like the SAIK RC-A2 or SAIK RC-A3.

Ownership verified by DX Great stuff
Posted by Ghlargh on 10/23/2007

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstarstarstarstar
Usefulness: starstarstarstarstar
Overall Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Pros: Surprisingly cheap concidering what every other supplier charges for solder paste.
Works like a dream.

Cons: Hard to dispense a small enough ammount without using a syringe.

Other Thoughts: This stuff is fantastic for soldering SMD with hot air, or multi-pad SMD with iron, but you really need to test out it's properties on something cheap before you try to solder something expensive, it is really easy to use too much and get shorts under your components.

Bottomline: Buy this if you solder SMD, it is just fantastic to work with.

Ownership verified by DX Not good at all.
Posted by Ghlargh on 10/23/2007
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstar
Build Quality: star
Usefulness: star
Overall Rating: starstar

Pros: It's cheap

Cons: This solder is of inferior quality, it doesn't wet or flow properly, and it conducts heat badly leading to it coming off in chunks sticking to your iron rather than melting uniformly and flowing out over the solder area.
In short, it act as the typical solder found in cheap asian made electronics, wich should not come as a surprise when you think about it.
Allso, the info says 0.3mm while the wire i got was 0.4mm, but it's the same brand and product line.

Other Thoughts: This solder works worse than pure tin wire wich makes you wonder why it was made in the first place, or maybe there are impurities in the metals that makes it this bad.

Bottomline: Buy your solder at your local electronics store if you need it, this stuff will only have you pulling your hair out in frustration.

Ownership verified by DX Good but bad...
Posted by Ghlargh on 10/22/2007
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: less than 1 day

Price: starstarstarstarstar
Ease of Use: starstarstarstarstar
Build Quality: starstar
Usefulness: star
Overall Rating: starstarstar

Pros: Cheap enough to buy a bunch and put everywhere. The shock is just enough to be unpleasant but not enough to hurt. The pen is silent.

Cons: Uses crappy AG3 button cells that may arrive dead. (My pens worked fine after i replaced the batteries, didn't work at all at first because the batteries that came with the pens were dead.)

Other Thoughts: The original ones used an AAA cell and a self-oscillating flyback coil that provided a good jolt and the battery lasted forever, these made a very tell-tale noise however.
The new ones uses an electronic oscillator that needs a higher voltage, so they come with four AG3 button cells that drain fast. They do however not make any sound.

Bottomline: Grab a bunch of these, but get some more AG3 battery cells too.
